Beautiful fortress, rare example of a military architect in a good state of conservation. Unfortunately, after purchasing our tickets, I was warned that I would have to wait 1h45 for a guided tour, the only opportunity to access the dungeon. Our turn was therefore limited to the gun room and the adjacent rooms. Too bad, I know few people willing to wait 1h45 in the middle of August...
It kind of ruined our discovery of this fortress.

Concerning the fortress, it is to do if you are in the region: part of it on a self-guided tour, another part with a historian guide who regularly deviates to tell small details of the history. Nothing to complain about, it’s great!

On the other hand, the Salses town hall has set up a large paid car park (€2) at the entrance to the village, marked as the fortress car park. Forget it! There is a large free parking lot at the foot of the fortress and with trees. This will save you the 2€, the car in full sun, and above all the 300 m to reach the fortress via a small car tunnel on a bend where a car and a pedestrian cannot cross paths… frankly dangerous!

A few minutes walk from the SNCF station and the center of the Salses village, its fortress disputed between Spain and France.
Very Ben, well preserved building.
The ticket (€8 for adults) allows an individual visit to the lower level and a guided tour of the dungeon and upper floors.
Numerous explanations during the guided tour on the functioning of the fortress, particularly during times of enemy siege.
Small shop.
You should take advantage of it for a meal in the village.

10 out of 10 for the fort and for the excellent guide. But a ZERO score for the person at reception who did not inform us correctly about combined tickets/reductions. We wanted to visit the fortress and the Rivesaltes memorial and were neither offered the combined ticket nor the "Pyrenees pass" which gives the right to lots of interesting discounts when visiting museums, monuments, nature reserves, etc. Fortunately her colleague was much kinder - although she couldn't exchange our individual ticket for a combined ticket because "the computer system doesn't allow it". She offered us the notebook with the discounts and apologized for her colleague's behavior. We visited the Rivesaltes memorial a few days later, a moving place where we were very kindly welcomed.
Once again: excellent guided tour of a remarkable historical site but a slightly bitter taste remained with us after the not very professional/impolite welcome from one of the people at reception (I would like to point out that we have nothing to complain about on the professionalism of other employees of the two sites visited).

18 euros as a couple, closed rooms, remains of furniture from an old exhibition and tents in the courtyard but that's not all... a film shoot, suffice to say that you had to aim to take photos! A guide offers me, to my disappointment, a 5-minute comic strip!!
must it compensate our expense!

Take the guided tour. It gives you access to areas that are not accessible to the general visits. Our guide was also very very good. Our tour was in French. In early November it is nice and quiet. There is so much more they could do here. Not much in terms of artifacts.

We arrived a little by chance in front of this fortress and do not regret it at all.
Guided tour highly recommended so as not to miss anything. The guide is excellent, bringing lively anecdotes while involving the audience, very good experience!!!!
To visit without thinking and with your eyes wide open!

Very beautiful fortress, witness to the Spanish military genius. Well maintained for 5 centuries (even Vauban participated).
Very interesting guided tour at very reasonable Award and optimal duration (45 minutes), especially for young children (there is even a room with games). But you can stay there during the day if you want, (sun and shade to choose).
What is Jean-Pierre doing to have a sign removed that says "Chateau-fort" at the exit of the municipal parking lot?

A must-do visit if you are in the region and if you like history. Magnificent fortress, the guide was really nice and gave us clear and even precise explanations depending on the questions and deviating on the history of France, really top notch. Above all, take the guided tour which will allow you to see a part of the fortress that you cannot do on your own.
Only downside: I thought we could go to the very top to have a more substantial view, but that in no way spoils the visit.

Staff not friendly. In a hurry to leave work an hour before closing!!!! Shop closed and abbreviated visit (only the low visit open at 5:20 p.m.) The fortress is very beautiful and if we come back to the area, we will arrive as soon as it opens in the hope of being better received!!!!

A bientôt
