We have been living in Mexico 6months a year for the last 9 years, and we both agree, the 2 day kayak/camping excursion with Gunner has been our favorite experience. Gunner is a wealth of information, a first class kayaker (he even built the beautiful kayaks we were using) and an excellent cook as well….I really appreciate the above and beyond shown me due to my dietary restrictions…the keto bread was fantastic and I truly appreciate it. Absolutely recommend this or any of Gunner’s kayak excursions to anyone who enjoys being out on the water enjoying nature and all the beauty of Laguna Bacalar…it is truly amazing!

I had such a good morning's birdwatching with Jacqueline in beautiful Bacalar. I'm fairly new to birdwatching in Mexico and it was genuinely revelatory. We didn't walk far - down to the lakeside , then along a quiet track on the forest edge. But with Jacqueline's knowledge, skill and patience, you come to realise just how much life there is all around you. We saw around 40 species from dawn to mid-morning: tanagers, tityras, gorgeous trogons and most excitingly, a toucan. Most of them were firsts for me. I'd recommend to anyone, and certainly if you're unsure about birding (or early mornings!) then Jacqueline is a brilliant person to convince you.

We went kayaking with Gunnar at lake Bacalar and to be honest, it was my favorite experience throughout our holiday in Mexico. We started the tour before sunset and visited several areas at the lake. Not only was it very nice, quiet and a beautiful site, but Gunnar's knowledge about the lake, the birds, the complete environment made this nature experience absolutely perfect. Thanks again Gunnar!

Gunnar was our guide on a kayaking trip around Laguna Bacalar. Rather than boring us with lots of marketing malarkey, he gave us information and understanding of the lake, the flora and fauna, and its ecological importance. He even built the kayaks that we used. Very rare in foreign countries to ever rent quality equipment. It was a wonderful 3 hours in a beautiful environment. Highly recommend this place.

Active Nature is a first rate company for Kayaking and Nature tours. I did a six hour kayaking tour with them and it was fabulous. We explored some of the hidden areas of the lake Bacalar. Gunnar, the guide, was extremely knowledgeable about the nature of the area. He showed as much of the natural beauty of the lake. The best part was going back in the hidden lagoon with the mangroves growing. It was fascinating to learn all that Gunnar had to offer. We paddled in wooden kayaks, crafted by Gunnar. Such a unique experience to enjoy these boats.
We also got to stop and swim on a beautiful beach and enjoy the fabulous lunch that Gunnar had put together.

Don’t miss seeing the true natural side of Lake Bacalar with Active Nature.

My husband and I went kayaking in Bacalar with Gunnar over two days and one night, and I can safely say it was one of the best experiences of your trip. Gunnar was a mine of local knowledge, helping us navigate the waters, but also giving us lessons in herbology and local Mexican life. We ate fruit right off from the cactus, the food was amazing, we went to see places no toursts go to, I can only say one thing : GO FOR IT ! Don't hesitate, you can trust Gunnar and Catherine to make the best experience possible for you, and the bed when we arrived was comfortable, in a beautiful room. What more can you wish for, really ?

We booked a two day kayak trip with overnight camping with Active Nature based out of Ecotucan on Laguna Bacalar. The weather had been unseasonably wet for the time of year but the day fortunately dawned clear and windless. We took off at 9.0 am as planned with Gunnar as our guide. He had also built our kayaks; beautiful hardwood laminated Greenlanders, real Ferraris, possibly slightly tippy for the inexperienced. But as an over weight near novice i quickly got use to the delicate balancing act required (with excellent advise from Gunnar).
Gunnar had loaded us with everything (and more) required for an overnight trip (amazing what can be packed into the orifices of these Kayaks) and we were soon skimming north with Gunnar giving us a running commentary on everything from the ornithology to the history of the area. Late afternoon the wind got up producing steep waves that slowed our progress so we cut short the plan for the day (made up the following day ) and headed for our camp site. We set to putting up tents and Gunnar prepared an excellent supper . He had also done this earlier for lunch and tea, producing exquisite food on top of the stern of a kayak!.
Tip, take a torch and plenty of chemical weapons for the mosquitoes, they really set to work.
A fabulous windless dawn and we breakfasted (superb), break camp and head for the rapids.
A little overstated, just a gentle currentrunning through a narrow in the Laguna allowing us, once we had paddled through, to don snorkels and masks and drift back on the current towing the Kayaks behind us checking out the wonderful lake life below. We then entered the mangrove swamps, beautiful, quiet and full of bird life and cruised home. The the sunset was
unforgettable.
The final pull across the lake in darkness, took it out of us, so we arrived back at Ecotucan exhausted but very happy, after a wonderful two days on this beautiful turquoise Laguna.
We can't rate it highly enough, great value for money. If you like ,lakes, kayaking, camping, do it,its amazing, you will be in expert hands.

My girlfriend and I took a tour today with Gunnar to discover in a 6 hour tour the amazing laguna of Bacalar and its hidden Mangrove. The tour and and the guide where really wonderfull, and we absolutely recommend the experience, I guess the best way to discover this gift of nature. Picnic provided and prepared by Gunnar was also really great, with freshly sliced tasty local fruits and vegetables. A mustsee!!
Plus, they provide free of charge pictures taken by the guide during the day :)
