George Orwell/Eric Arthur Blair grave
Aug 2018 • Couples
Grave is located in Sutton Courtenay All Saints church graveyard that is next door to George and Dragon pub. Parking available outside church or pub. Grave is located towards the centre rear of graveyard and is a small, simple headstone marked as Blair not Orwell. A red rose bush is by its side. The graveyard is also the resting place of Herbert Asquith, former prime minister, (and wife) in a tomb grave that is located close to the rear right of the church building. Worth a 5 minute visit if you are interested or just been to the pub.

It's a grave. End of.

In the village and thought way not? Liked some of his books and respected some of his views.
The simplicity of the grave was appropriate to the man. A simple headstone with his birth name and not his pen name.
One for the fans.

Here rests in peace one of the greatest man of the twentieth century

Sutton Courtenay is a pleasant small village in South Oxfordshire, along a lovely stretch of the Thames. Whether you arrive by car or by boat, do not miss a visit to the church. Not only is it a pleasant medieval church; it is also surrounded, like most churches, by a pleasant graveyard. At the very bottom, a simple tombstone marks the grave of Eric Arthur Blair (1903-1950), better known to the world as George Orwell, his pen-name. Such a simple burial for one of the greatest writers and fighters of the 20th Century is moving. A pilgrimage to this place is a must for whoever still believes in freedom, justice and dignity.

This little church is well kept and the graveyard has a few interesting stories behind it. The Orwell grave is well readily see.
