Rolling, green hill thanks to buckets and buckets of rain. Fields of yellow sunflowers and some blackened, ready for harvest. Back country dirt roads lead through to very heart of the Vredafort Dome. Standing all alone in the middle of a field is a windmill. Blue skies and wispy clouds. Then off to the information center up the valley. Every... More

Hi Stephanie, sorry the info centre was closed during your visit but it's often staffed by volunteers and we are unable to keep the doors open every day. While the science of impact craters is very interesting, for many non geologists a rock is but a rock and its the scenic beauty of the site that captures the heart of... More

Visiting the Vredefort Dome is an incredible experience if you know what to look out for. Therefor, before you go make sure that you read up on the what, where and when. If at all possible engage the services of an accredited guide - this will prevent you falling for security guards posing as guides. We stayed at the Potchefstroom... More

Tucked out of the way is perhaps one of the most amazing periods of geological history of our planet. I would also recommend watching YouTube to get the full background and history of this area as it is fascinating. There is also a great pub here that does superb light meals and refreshments. The staff at the site were so... More

We stayed at the Kopjeskraal Country Lodge. Unfortunately there was a mix up in the booking which split the group, but Christo accommodated us and made up. This was self service accommodation but we had the run of the lapa. The accommodation is basic. The breakfast at the large lapa was sumptious and enjoyable. Christo does the heritage tour on... We consider ourselves almost "chosen ones" - well, at least very lucky - because we were able to spend several wonderful days in the area and with the help of excellent guides and passionate local people we got to appreciate power, beauty and charm of Vredefort. At the same time I have to admit it is not the easiest attraction... More

had breakfast at the Viljoenskroon bar/restaurant. Cute and well worth it. Pity about the passing traffic that didn't slow down resulting in dust..Rest of the day was spent on a 4x4 route at Berakah. Great fun. On the negative side, the signage was poor and besides the new attractions the rest of the resorts were run down.

We were really excited to visit this heritage site, but were very disappointed when we got there. All the entrances were closed, and there were yellow signs everywhere directing us away from the site. The whole place looked like it was abandoned from the roadside. I'm not sure if it is really closed or just not well managed, but it's... More

We went as a group to Kopjeskraal Country Lodge twice for Nature workshops. The personal experience that I had there was exceptionally beautiful. This place brings you so close to nature and back to your soul. Nico the owner is a walking Encyclopedia and wants his visitors to enjoy every minute of there stay.

Yes, the owner (Christo) knows the area well and is an excellent guide. Very pleased to hear you enjoyed the natural surrounds, something I'm also passionate about. It is a very unique site and those of us living in the area are indeed priveliged to be here. Two visits are not definitely not enough so trust we'll see you here... More

We decided to visit on a Saturday afternoon and at first thought it was closed. However, George appeared from the dilapidated security box. He gave us a tour of the meteorite. He was very knowledgeable and friendly. However it was sad to see the heritage site is such disrepair and neglect.

We have requested that the authorities take down all signage leading to this visitors centre which is CLOSED. "George" is not a registered guide but a security guard and sadly gives access and makes up stories for unwary visitors. The "visitor centre" was built on granite rock, and is not the meteorite which fell 2025 years ago. All that has... More
