A visit to the Kolnbreinsperre is a great packagedeal. The winding alpine road (Hochalmstrasse) to the dam as the dam itself (and the 200m high airwalk) are impressive. The impressive road is in excellent and safe condition, where needed traffic is arranged by trafficlights to organize one-way traffic on the narrow road. You'll find good walking trails at the end... It's a beautiful drive up the road towards the dam and there is many spectacular views along the way, that you can stop and explore. When you reach the top the dam it self it's breathtaking, the size and height of it is really something to wonder. It's well worth the price to drive up this beautiful road and the... More

We stayed in the area for a few days and this place was recommended to us by our hotel. Using our Karnten Card we got free admission and then took our time taking in all the sights and the wonderful engineering of the roads, tunnels and if course the dam itself. A truly wonderful place to visit in rain or... More

A beautiful drive along winding scenic, up to the alpine and to Kolnbreinsperre. Stop along the way, wonderful treasure trove at the berg krystal chalet. The Dam is awesome, great Hütte there for gemütlichkeit and traditional Austrian menu.

It really makes you think about your insignificance in this world. Breathtaking masterpiece of engineering. Make sure that it's open for a visit, as usual opening times are from early May until late October. Highly recommended.

Both the Malta road and the dam are spectacular. Do not hurry, enjoy the sights, stop along the way. Interesting visitors center at the dam. Worth hiking along the lake. Don't miss the Sky walk. Free with Karnten card.

From Gmünd up the road to Kolnbreinsperre is a special experience. The road is narrow an winding but feels very safe. It was a very cold summer day. There is a restaurant and a big souvenire shop. .

I don't know which was better - the Dam itself or the adventure to get there via the Malta High Alpine Road! This is a spectacular attraction with a photo to be taken with every step, be it man-made magnificence or astonishing natural beauty. Wandering across the dam or spending time on the Airwalk, there are limitless places to stop... More

Scenic drive up a winding mountain road through tunnels and overlooking waterfalls and forests. At the top the view is spectacular, breathtaking! Make sure to bring warm clothes as even in Mid summer there is snow on the mountain peaks and the temperature is surprisingly cold. There are traffic controls at one point on the drive up where there is... More
