About
The Gorge of Serrai di Sottoguda, Temple of Nature, is a picturesque gorge cut into the rock with cliffs over 100 meters. In this gorge you will find various waterfalls. In addition, for 13 times the stream intersects with the bridges. The route is about 2.5 km. The site is located between the village of Sottoguda, wonder of the Dolomites and the Marmolada, the Queen of the Dolomites. Why shoul I pay for it?In order to have access to the gorge, in the daytime, a contribution from visitors is requested. The aim of this contribution is the enhancement of the site so that it is maintained and improved. The site is managed by the Consortium Marmolada, not-for-profit consortium. This consortium, with clear arrangements with the municipality of Rocca Pietore ensures that 100% of the gain is allocated to the Serrai di Sottoguda and the Municipality of Rocca Pietore with maintenance and improvement works. Each year we proceed with the safety of the walls, with the change and maintenance of fences, are also maintained clean the Serrai and most of the paths of the town of Rocca Pietore and much more. The staff is also local and from Agordino.Being opposed to this it means to be opposed to the maintenance of the site and to its improvement.

Visit made on Sunday, August 1. To park, you can enter the village (with caution) following the signs that lead to a large area located on the right, go down a narrow street, or there is a parking just before the village. The Infopoint is about two minutes walk away in the first case, about 10 in the second. As already well explained by another user, you register within 4 days before, entering your data including the Identity Card (being a Shipyard , the company that is managing the work opens an ad hoc insurance for each person, so there are obviously conditions to be subject to but well explained in the rules and nothing that limiting or intrusive - although as usual there are the smart guys who do not get there... ). However, since this will all end on September 15, I speak of the visit. Unfortunately I confirm that the charm of the area has been lost, now the intervention of man is evident, and the magic of walking close to the stream has been lost (the current walkways are about 6 meters above it, safety measure, calculated based on the maximum predictable water flow). Fortunately the visit is guided, and therefore you have an interesting geological and historical explanation of the area, and also being in only 30 people makes you appreciate more sounds and surrounding noises. The tour lasted about an hour and a half (total return length just under 4 km, elevation gain 230): since it is free, I suggest you take advantage, but if you had already seen them before Vaia, you will probably have a bit of magone left...

We commenced the walk from Sottoguda, which meant that we were walking up towards Malga Ciapela, a distance of some 2.5 klms. The height difference between these two points is just over 200 metres but, as the paved roadway climbs only steadily for most of this distance, weaving up the canyon with bridges crossing the stream in many points, we did not really notice the climb until the last 500 metres or so.

There are also several items of interest to see along the way including a small chapel, a cave holding a statue of the Holy Virgin and a waterfall. There is also a rock carving of a sacred heart, but dispite the 3 signs advising of its existence you will not see it as it was carved in the rock on the side of the old road and is not clearly visible from the new road built in WWI. The only traffic on the road now is walkers, bike riders going uphill one way only and the passenger road train.

Cost of entry was Euro3 for a return walk. The passenger road train ran from 9.00am to 18.30, with a 2 hour break from 12.30pm for lunch and cost Euro5.50 for a return trip.

We parked in a parking area (cost Euro1.50 per hour) about a 100 metres from the start of the walk in Sottoguda and gained access to it by driving up the narrow road through the village.

At the Malga Ciapela end you are able to catch the cable cars (3 in total) to the top of the Marmolada.

We had an enjoyable lunch at a reasonable price at the Algergo Malga Ciapela hotel.

From the parking lot of the cable car to the marmolada, walk down (or drive) to the lower part of the parking lot, there is an entrance to a natural reserve.
Walk downhill and enjoy the walk and place.
It's a canyon with a nice stream running in it.
It takes an hour max to get down and there is a small train up.

After years they finally reopened... that is, you can visit the site for free. You must register at least 4 days (30 places per shift) in advance in the dedicated portal (corrected the information on the site but people complain because they search for information on the internet incorrectly).
You have to show up 30 minutes before the slot booked, unfortunately I arrived 10 minutes early due to traffic and I was replaced. There is a list outside the gate where you can queue for short shifts and valid only on the same day. I registered immediately and entered the next round because 6 people did not show up.
As well specified animals can not enter or you have to put documents at the time of registration (just some people in front of me were rejected for this). The reason is that you enter a construction site so the regulation and insurance must be respected in comma.
Upon entering we were handed some construction helmets and the Guide explained the behavior to keep.

The lockers, for those who have seen them pre Vaia, are definitely not as they used to be... they have lost a lot of charm due to safety works (essential to do) but still deserve a visit especially if with a Guide.

After this "open construction site" project ends on September 15, it is not yet known what the municipality of Rocca Pietore will do. When will it open to everyone? Will it be paid? Will it be open in winter? Will you enter only with Guide? Will there be the train like it used to be? For now, these are questions without Response.

We didn't have the reservation, because we didn't know. We presented ourselves at the entrance as the staff of the tourist office had told us and there were two free seats, unfortunately we were three; for a very selfish person who was alone (and they entered with one person less) we did not enter so much taxation by the Veneto Region for a walk. I hope they're just as fiscal with those who don't pay taxes. Disappointed.
So much for the welcome.

As has been the case since 2003, this year we spent our holidays in Val Fiorentina, visiting as always the wonderful surrounding area.
It includes the Serrai di Sottoguda, a rare natural Superstar of great charm and tourist attraction. Unfortunately we have seen de visu how the "restoration" work of the Serrai - however not completely completed - have gone in the wrong direction, completely distorting the place and its uniqueness. A real shambles, where the authenticity of the mountain was preferred to the Disneyland model (and we are only at the beginning). All this with an investment (so far) of over 11 million euros, to which must be added the considerable maintenance costs necessary year on year. And if the Pettorina stream doesn't take back the malt.
We are privileged to have walked them several times and keep their (bitter) memory of how they were.

The Sottoguda canyon is a nice walk. The path is wide and paved so you can go there with children strollers. Even disabled people on scooters can enjoy it. I recommned to start the walk on the Sottoguda side, walk until point 7 on the track and than go back. If one person in the group is fit enought you can go all the way up and the "poor" guy will go back, bring the car and meet you there.

One of the most beautiful track in the Dolomities has been ruined by a private cooperative. Infact is no longer free and the access is restricted by a 2.50 euro payment.
It is so sad to see such a natural beauty, Unesco umanity patrol, without a free access.
In historical economical crisis, the Italian Governement asks the people to pay again.

First of all, thank you for your review. For a few years in order to access the Serrai, during daylight hours and in the summer months, there is a small contribution from visitors. The aim of this contribution is the enhancement of the site so that it is maintained and improved. The site is managed by the Consortium Marmolada, not-for-profit consortium. This consortium, with clear arrangements with the municipality of Rocca Pietore ensures that 100% of the proceeds is allocated to Serrai di Sottoguda and the Municipality of Rocca Pietore with improvements and maintenance works for the good of our Guests. Every year we proceed with the safety of the walls, with the change and maintenance of fences, are also maintained in order Serres and most of the paths of the town of Rocca Pietore, are given grants to other organizations such as the Volunteer of ambulance of Rocca Pietore and much more. Being opposed it means to be opposed to the maintenance, improvement and site visit. It's a shame when people does not inform themselves before writing. The Serrai, unfortunately, are not UNESCO, but it is the Marmolada. Thanking you hope to see you again in the Val Pettorina | Dolomites.

Easy walk trough a spectacular setting. The 100m tall waterfalls freeze during wintertime, making this location even more unique and impressive.

We were recommended this as part of an all day outing from Alba di Canazei. We were told to park by the cable car in Malgo Ciapella and do the walk after going up Marmolada. Having already been up one side of Marmolada at Fienne we decided to do the walk. We were also concerned about time. The walk is beautiful. Everyday you look you are struck by the natural beauty. It is about 2km long and from Malgo Ciapella it is all downhill. We were advised to walk downhill and get the train back. However the last morning train from Sottoguda back up is at about 12:20. We got there in time but it was full. Rather than waiting until 2:30pm we decided to walk back. With four kids aged 9, 7, 4 and 2 (who was mostly in a buggy) this was not easy. There is a 200 metre height difference but most of that is covered towards the very end so whilst the way is very smooth and easy for a buggy it is a hard push. We were all pretty exhausted by the end of the walk back but then sat and had lunch to recover before going on to the Lake at Alleghe for some pedalos! Hopefully will post about that.
This walk is great for those who appreciate nature. Our four boys were happy to do it (at least downhill). In winter I am sure it is stunning with the ice falls but we were mesmerised by the beauty in the summer.

Please note that the parking by the cable car is actually a good 500 metres from the entrance and there is some parking a bit closer which is worth considering with smaller kids.
