Having read the reviews and seen some photographs we decided this place looked and sounded interesting. This monastery requires a very tricky drive from Collobrieres or the nearby coast, and I have to say that following the visit I concluded that the monastery itself was not worth the stress and strain of the nerve-wracking drive. The first view of the... More

The reconstruction is awe-striking. So is the road to it. Truly a mountain road of sports car challenge. No shoulders; few guard rails of any sort; hairpin turns; blind corners: so much fun!!! Happy I had a standard to drive. Better fun!! Nice, self-guided tour inside. The view of the valley below explains the siting of the building. Have to... More

Chartreuse de la Verne is an amazing citadel hidden in the Steeply wooded hillside on a windy twisty road from the riverside village of Collobriere. On this my second visit the walk from the carpark afforded glimpses of this spectacular building perched on the edge of a hill, but what astounded me was the extraordinary and varied species of butterflies... This was our fourth visit to this wonderful place. Yes it is a tricky drive, but it is well worth the effort, particularly on a sunny clear day. The effort and commitment of those who have rebuilt the once ruin is quite staggering. Closed Tuesdays

An then there's the monastery itself, totally rebuilt from the ruin we first saw some 30 years ago. We can recommend the guided tour and, for those who don't speak French, there's an informative 8-page pamphlet in English, also pamphlets are available in German, Dutch and Italian. We were there in the morning and the guided tour of one an... More

It took us a while to find the place - it is off the beaten path, but absolutely worth the trip. you need to park the car about a km away from the Monastery, but it is worth the walk! The drive is a bit too exciting on the way up as it is a tiny road, but all is... More

Probably one of the biggest monasteries we've ever visited. The drive there is lovely but quite adventurous and not once did we see the monastery. We parked our car in the car park and from there it is about 750m walk and suddenly the monastery dooms up out of the forrest. The staff was really nice and helpful. They offer... More

Great to look around and well restored. Unfortunately it was foggy so we could not see the panorama to St Tropez.

Wonderful place, so peaceful, well renovating, lost on the hills surrounding by a lovely forest and with amazing views. The drive to get there is lovely (drive slowly and careful though!!!). A true moment of authenticity and peace, away from the tumult of the season (if being there in July and August). Extremely refreshing and truly inspiring!!! Not to be... More

My boyfriend and I decided to drive to Chartreuse de la Verne (we actually were hiking there one day but we got caught in a thunderstorm and we got paranoid there were large animals in the forest so we chickened out after about an hour... but if you would like the hiking trail contact me and i'll be happy to...
