This place had been recommended to us by French friends who live in a nearby town. In the UK, we are lucky enough to be familiar with two sites where wealthy industrialists took the decision to look after their workers well - George Cadbury in Bournville and Titus Salt in Saltaire. However, these men constructed villages consisting of traditional streets.... More

We had a day with no plans and came here thanks to comments on Trip Advisor. It was certainly unexpected and very interesting. We were quite impressed with the history and the excellent way this was presented. We would certainly recommend this site.

We spent hours here and really didn't expect to. Very modern exhibits and interesting story. We did not do a guided tour as they are only in French but all the exhibits are labelled and explained in French and English so did not feel we were missing out. We are staying in Guise so very local but agreed it would... More

It's the Wandering Yank here. Mrs. Yank and I are visiting relatives in the area, and they recommended we visit this, something I had never heard of. It's essentially the remnants of a Utopian social-industrial experiment that lasted about 100 years, which is pretty amazing when one knows that most similar initiatives failed within a few years. The complex is... More

We discovered this site by chance because of a television program and what a find. A fascinating project that continued to live for decades after Jean-Baptiste André Godin, the founder, died. The whole "city" is fascinating especially the central pavilion explaining the communal way of life as well as the founder's approach, the theater, school, laundry and swimming pool and... More

Very interesting - you can easily spend 4 hours there! Lot to see and to learn, and a museum that should become a reference!

This is quite amazing - a 19th century industrialist of modest origins who in his youth toured France and was horrified at the living and working conditions of the average factory worker. Accordingly, he vowed that if he was every in a position to employ people, he would ensure that they lived and worked in a better environment. A few... More
