About
It is a small religious building located adjacent to the Stilo village, on the slopes of Monte Consolino. The term "Cattolica" probably comes from the Greek "Katholikon" which indicates the place of worship of a monastic complex or the cultural center for hermits who lived in the same area. The expressive richness, belonging to a typically Byzantine architectural tradition, places it in full title among the most notable Calabrian monuments.

The price of €5 contains a culture tax (€1) to raise funds for the floods in Romagna. It was already a lot to charge €4 for a jewel which however does not require more than 10 minutes for a careful visit without the support of a guide who explains the artistic elements and the history of the temple, let alone €5. A few years ago the visit was free. In 2019 the price was €3. Furthermore, to purchase the entrance ticket you need to use a particularly complicated online site which requires at least 20 minutes to reach the result. Let's think about those who are not familiar with these tools. How do they plan to facilitate tourism in Calabria in this way?

Among the mountains of Stilo there is this small church of Byzantine origins. Inside there are several frescoes. It takes longer to reach it than to visit it but the surrounding landscape and its frescoes are worth a visit without having too many expectations. Online booking.

One of the few surviving testimonies of Byzantine Calabria. It is a small but harmonious square-shaped church set into the slope of a mountain. The building is well preserved and inside, it seems like entering a precious crypt supported by four pillars, very high with the light coming down from above, with remains of ancient frescoes on the walls. A visit lasting a few tens of minutes, but very interesting and I would say obligatory in Calabria.

Small jewel of Greek-Byzantine Calabria, very well preserved and truly fascinating. Guided tour recommended to fully understand its otherwise hidden meaning, given that unfortunately there are no brochures or books available on site that tell the details. In the absence of a guide, it is better to prepare by reading and informing yourself first.

The most holy place we visited on this extended visit to Southern Italy. In itself, made our visit to Stilo more than worthwhile. The history and modesty of the structure, allied with the wealth of cultures represented in it, was humbling and inspiring.

Cattolica is a beautifully restored Byzantine church with portions of frescos still clearly visible, in Stilo, a village nested in the hills of Calabria, near the sea.
Too bad there was no information or brochures with historical details provided. It is still worth a visit just to see this structure, simple and beautiful.

Both the town Stilo and especially the church from the 10th century are worth a visit. There is a strong sense of ancient history, coupled with beautiful nature surrounding it. Plenty of hikes, not just up to the castle.

The Cattolica of Stilo is probably the single most important classical Byzantine monument in Southern Italy despite its small size. It is also very picturesque as it is tucked in the steep side of Monte Consolino, a huge rocky mountain above Stilo. The church itself is superbly restored and its surroundings are carefully maintained. Inside there are interesting medieval frescoes and four antique columns supporting the central dome.
