Stunning castle in the top of the hill dominating the Ansouis village. The views are gorgeous and the castle itself is really impressive in term of architecture history and garden. The lovely owners are the cherry on the top, very kind and passionates about their castle.

You have an excellent opportunity to visit private chateau which is more than 600 years old and consist of two buildings which were combined in one. The tour is guided by the owner who tells you an extremely interesting history of this moment. Although, you have a nice opportunity to discover the antique collection of the owners. The view on the valley is fantastic and I hope it will not be destroyed by new buildings. You can enter inside only one time per day at 15:00, the guided tour is done in French. They accept payment by cash only.

The Chateau by itself is much like the other castles in the area. The special thing here is a town that stands apart, even from a host of other charming small towns.

Beautiful place but everything was closed. We walked around the village a bit. It is pretty but nothing was open. Couldn't even get a cup of coffee. Best to check if the place is open before you go there.

The chateau dominates the village of Ansouis as it has since the middle ages when the original fortress was built. This still exists, largely unchanged within the "stately home" that was added in the 17th century and which connects to it.

My wife and I visited once years ago when the ancestral owners had really let the building decline and it was largely unfurnished. Eventually sold by auction, it was bought by a wealthy Provençal couple who have diligently researched its every aspect. They have restored the structure and redecorated the state rooms using entirely authentic materials. They have collected furniture, pictures and objects d'art with which they have brought the place back to life. What is more, they have done all this without any subsidy. What dedication!

And it doesn't stop there because it is madame, the distaff side of the two proprietors, who gives you the 90 minute tour herself. At 10€ for adults, this represents very good value for money.

There are some potential disadvantages. In May, when we visited, there is only one tour a day at 3:00 pm. Madame speaks clearly, but only in French and I did not see any printed material in other languages. There is a book about the place which you can buy as you leave, but this was written by the previous owner before the restoration.

The Chateau of Ansouis is being lovingly restored by its current owners who are passionate about preserving the history of the area. There are 2 tours a day, in the mid to late afternoon and they are conducted by the owner. It is really worth seeing, particularly seeing the way the building has been adapted over time, but the tour is only conducted in French, and my very rusty schoolgirl French was not quite up to the task, although I did get the gist of the description. So it is up to you if you feel you need the commentary..

We visited the Chateaux in Ansouis, having visited this beautiful little town earlier in the week. We paid 9 euros per adult and I think this was reasonable value. The visit is entirely in French, which is fine; I do not expect everyone to give talks in English if there is no market for it! It did however stretch my vocabulary somewhat! None the less it was interesting to see and had beautiful architecture and views.

Be warned if your french is not good, you are likely to get a little bored, and want to move at a faster pace. Personally I would prefer a free visit where you love at your own pace.
