We booked a 3-days horse-riding trek thanks to the Shepherd's Life agency in Kotchkor and had a wonderful experience there. The lake is only reachable at the very end of May and for most of the summer. When we went, the local families there had just come back and were still setting up the yurts : it's a great opportunity to help them set them up and share a moment with the families there. Besides, most tourists had no arrived yet, so the place was almost all for ourselves.

The trek itself can be somewhat challenging for beginners, but still entirely worth it. The view stays scenic all the way, especially at the passes and when the lake first appears to you. The local families were friendly and hospitable, and we slept and ate very well there.
Our guide Beka spoke English and was a great conversationer, and helped us if we had any trouble. The agency's boss in Kotchkor was very competent, and organized everything for us extremely fast. She also came back to Bichkek with us after the end of our Son Kul Lake trip, and invited us to drink tea with her at some of her favorite tea places on the way back.

Overall an amazing experience I would recommend to anyone in Kyrgyzstan, especially early before the summer months where it gets more crowded. It was very worth it, both in terms of experience and for its costs.

My lovely days in Song Kol lake. I have visited when here was snow, its very good experience to see full of snow. Every day I ride 5-6hrs, I think for the beginners also is fine, horses are calm and guide always help to you.

I contacted with some local companies and booked tour with "Kyzart Travel" company, from the beginning quikly answering, helpfull and good price.

Before comin to Kirgizistan you shoud bring your warm jackets. During the trip temperature was +10 at night - 10-15. I think in winter more colder. This is best destination for horse riding, see local life and sleep in yurt!

Kyzart Travel organised for us a trip to Song Kul.
That was great: Beginning I asked horse riding to Song kol lake, and company recommended start from Bishkek by car till Kyzart village, We ride horse 2 days. 2 days by car. Our itinerary:

1. Bishkek - Kyzart 7 hours. On the way stopped to Burana tower and Kochkor
2: Kyzart - Kilemtche valley 5 hours on a horse
3. Kilemtche - Song Kul lake
4. Song Kul lake - bishkek en route visited to Kok moinok canyon.

The horses for beginners is safe. They have horses special for begginners and for professionals. I would recommend to everyone to try this adventure. The company arrange different kind of tours, just tell them how many days do you have, and experince.
At night yurt camp was colder about 0 degree. So its better to take more warmer jackets. In yurt camp family was very friedly and smiling.

Very easy to contact them on Kyzart.travel@gmail.com or Facebook. If you tell them from Emma, they do discount for you

After an incognito 2020, i decided to do something adventurous in 2021 and wow what i start i had in Kyrgyzstan. I flew to Bishkek 0n 2nd feb and decided to visit places which are famous in summer but inaccessible by conventional ways in winter. My goal was to ride to the top of the song kul lake on a horse in a snowy and a bit dangerous mountain path. To fullfil my goal, i met with Aman, the owner of Kyrgyz riders (+996558033880). It took us 2 days to reach the top of the lake and the journey was mind blowing and hands down the best experience of my life !. The path was covered with snow and we had to often get down the horses to navigate them without stepping on ice which would break the horse leg ! The crisp winter breeze turned to extreme wind with temperatures well below negative 10 C. we had to climb over a mountain pass 3400 meters above sea level. The path after the pass was extraordinary and straight out of pictures i have seen of antartica ! wow what an experience it was! the lake was frozen and the ice thickness was well above 1.5 meters. if you can carry your skies along with you, it would be a great experience to ski there ! and best of all i was the ONLY tourist there !!!! can you believe it haha because in summer i think more than 100 K people visit this place !. Thank you Aman and Kyrgyz riders for such an amazing experience. Kyrgyz riders (+996558033880).

This is a must visit when in the country. The lake is very beautiful and you can stay overnight in the yurt camps by the lake and experience what it is like to live like the locals. Great to wake up early in the morning to wait for sunrise and also to star gaze at night.

Reaching Song Kol is easily arranged but requires some effort. You need to access on horse, on foot or through a few bumpy hour's car-ride from Kochkor or Naryn. The road from the A365 up to the lake is paved about half of the way. Without a 4x4s this route is challenging but possible. Kyzart Travel and other agencies, of which there are several alternatives in Kochkor, can arrange return transport for $80-$100 per car. The various agencies in Kochkor also arrange for tracking or horses (with guide) for trips of various lengths to and from Song Kul including yurt-stays on the shore of the lake. Such tours start and end in Kochkor, but can be combined to include hiking up and taking a car down from the lake. Some companies like Kyzart Travel can arrange 1-2-3 days or multiple day tours up to and around the lake for as low as $50 per person per day if you are more people more cheaper

If you visit Kyrgyzstan, Son Kol lake is a must-see place. The calmness and being away from hustle bustle of the civilization will charge your soul and senses.
There are three passes to get to the lake. Each one is beautiful and scenic for taking pictures and enjoying the views.
If you need a place to stay, there are yurt camps. Mind that there is no electricity except for the solar powered accumulators and fuel generators.
It's a place where there is a lot of farm and native animals. You can see yaks, cows, horses, sheep. The lake is mesmerizing and calm.
