Gamboa Rainforest Resort Guided Bird-Watching Tour Gamboa Experienced Panamanian birding guide 565693682 We used a local English speaking guide, Jacobo Ortega, arranged by Gamboa Rainforest Tours for two local birding tours (the area near the Gamboa Lodge plus the nearby Pipeline Road). We are experienced birders and it was clear that Jacob knew his birds and was determined to locate the really tough ones to find. The nearby Pipeline Road is well known in the birding community and, due to heavy usage, now requires extra skill and patience. Amongst ~96 species, he found a tiny hawk and a rufous-breasted antthrush. We would recommend jacobo_ortega@yahoo.com.

We stayed at the Gamboa Rainforest Resort and had a wonderful stay. We did some of the other tours arranged by the Resort and enjoyed them. We wanted to do a guided birding tour of the Pipe Line Road. Our daughter is a biologist that does research three months a year at a field station close by and she was going to go with us. We only had one day available and the two regular tours by the resort were full. The very helpful staff at the tour desk arranged a tour for us with a professional birding guide for more hours and just for the three of us. We could not have been more pleased with the experience. He truly is a professional bird guide. His name was Jacobo Ortega, of Birding in Panama. See my TripAdvisor review on his site. The Gamboa can arrange tours with him for not only the Pipe Line Road, but other places in the area. We intend to do a several day tour of other parts of Panama with Jacob next year when we come to visit our daughter again.

We spent about 3 hours walking the Pipeline and saw maybe 8-10 different birds. It was a waste of money because our guide didn't know much about the birds. He was very nice, but he didn't know what we were seeing except for the Toucans and the orioles.

This was a very disappointing waste of our money! $47 with taxes each. We walked about 2 km of the famous for birding Pipeline Road outside of Gamboa. We had read it was safer to have a guide. The trail was great! It would have been even greater if the guide had known anything about the birds. He was very nice, but admitted he had little knowledge of birds. Everything we saw was pointed out by one of us. Our "guide" didn't notice when some of the group didn't get tot the tram and started to leave without them!! Not even a bottle of water was included! It is a very easy trail to walk and we could easily have walked it ourselves. Saw a few other birders along the way and back. It's the same road to the Pipeline Road that you take to the Panama Rainforest Discovery Center (wish we'd gone there!), which you can drive to--even tho there is an unmanned gate to drive thru. The visitor center (http://www.pipelineroad.org/) there had hummingbird feeders and there was an abundance of different kinds of hummingbirds. Spend your dollars on this place, forget the "guided" hike with the hotel!

We drove out from Panama City to do this hike, which was very disappointing. When we signed up we were told the hike would cover 17 km, but we scarcely went half that. Our guide seemed to be a nice person, but had few "guide" skills. He told us he was not a bird expert, and did not keep track of all the people in our group of 8. We understand that one cannot be assured of seeing wildlife on a nature hike, but almost every animal or bird we saw we discovered on our own. Not at all worth the $47 per person (including taxes).
