About
Gavalas family winery, one of the oldest wineries in Santorini, lies in the traditional village of Megalochori. The purpose of our family is to highlight the particular characteristics of Santorini’s “terroir”. The fourth generation winemaker is George Gavalas and the fifth is his son, Vagelis. With proper respect to the local varieties, we are focused on limited production bottlings. Gavalas winery vinifies the most vibrant variety in Greece, Assyrtiko, as well as Aidani, Mandilaria and Mavrotragano. In order to show the richness of the land, we are the only winery in Santorini that vinifies the indigenous rare varieties of Katsano and Voudomato.

    Best winery in Santorini
We had the chance to visit the winery as part of a tour and it was the greatest experience ever! Very traditional l, with great wines and amazing people who run the place! We couldn't have asked for more! Highlight was the cellars and the 300 year old room for stomping the grapes!

    Great wines!
I wanted to get some local wine whilst on the island and as I had just arrived this place was suggested to me! The wine here is absolutely amazing something unique that I have never tasted their natural one was the best. It’s an old winery and definitely a must visit

    Delightful Family Run Winery
Beautiful wines, accompanied by a detailed explanation of each wines origin, variety & paring recommendations by the charming Nadia. The winery is family run & attention to detail was first rate. We actually met one of the owners during our tour.

    A 10/10 Experience - highly recommend
We have done wine tastings all over the world and this one was among the best. If you are lucky you will get Nadia as your hostess and she is extremely knowledgeable in both the wines poured and the wine history of Santorini. The wine quality is excellent and the facilities quite historic. A 10/10 for sure thanks to the winemaker and Nadia.

    Cutest Winery
This place was awesome! We discovered wine tours and tastings were quite a bit different in Greece than other regions. But this is nice family run business. They paired food with each wine and explained the wine itself and history. The wines were excellent!

Best Wine Tasting - Must Do in Santorini!
A beautiful winery with the most distinct and spectacular wines! Our host, Kristina, walked us through the rare wines tasting and pairings, taking the extra time to answer our questions, walking us through the vineyard’s history, and making us feel at home. This is a must stop place if you are in Santorini and be sure to bring some of their award winning dessert wine home for family and friends! Such a rich history, amazing people, and the best wine Greece has to offer!

    Best Experience!
The Wines of Santorini was the best tasting with six of their lovely wines and this small family winery in a perfect little village. Small bites were paired with each wine. Wonderful explanations provided on wines. Loved It!

Small but very high quality winery
Tucked away in a quiet corner of beautiful Megalochori village is this more low-key winery. There is no space for coachloads of cruise ship tourists and it is all the better for it. The tour was informative and the staff very welcoming. We loved the mix of tradition with modern viticulture, and the quality of the wines was outstanding. They’re on Google Maps so easy to find just off the main Fira - Perissa road with frequent public bus service. Highly recommended.

Surprisingly good white, rose, and red wines
I lived in SF for 10+ years and Rome for 1.5 years, my wife her whole life in the Bay Area, and we have tried a lot of wine. We went here thinking there might be one or two good white wines, if that. Instead we were blown away by the quality of the white, rose, and red wines. Very interesting, refined, and complex wines. Good service as well. Check this out if you care about wine quality rather than a nice view.

    The perfect family winery
A lovely family run winery that does very good wine. Perfect way to experience some of the Santorini wines and have a tour of a very old winery. The price is a lot better than other options at Santorini and the people are very accommodating really making you feel part of the family.

This vineyard produces outstanding wines. This is a five generation boutique winery. Their white wines are exceptional. Nykteri and Santorini are lovely medium bodied dry whites. The volcanic soil of Santorini gives them a unique quality and a wonderful taste to the palette. Their Vin Santo variety is the best I have tasted on the island. It is raisin fruity and semi sweet so it does not overpower the wine. There are several types of wine tastings available, and you do need to reserve in advance. Well worth the time to tour and taste the wines.

I would highly recommend visiting Gavalas winery if interested in wine. It was a beautiful experience and so easy to access in the middle of Megalochori. As it is a small vineyard it was a really personalised wine tasting with great attention to detail. I was lucky to have Georgia as my hostess. As a graduate of Oenology, she was really passionate about wines and gave exceptional detail on Santorini wines and grapes. The tasting included 6 tastings which include a lovely food tasting plate with each item paired to taste with each wine. A beautiful experience in every way. Great way to learn about Santorini wine making.

The wines were really good and they provided small food pairings for each wine. I would have liked to have had more time at the table to enjoy the wine. Our reservation was for an hour an 15 minutes and I felt like we were being rushed off right at an hour.

If you are a wine aficionado , you should definitely go pay a visit to this winery. Small and still family owned after many generation, you can experience a genuine wine tasting with very clear and good explanations. The perfect way to end a nice day on the island and much better in our opinion than other places which were too touristic and where we were treated like a number. Cherry on the cake: the wines were very good.

Visted during our honeymoon. Very sweet family winery. We stumbled upon it and were lucky enough to grab a table for some wine tasting. Tasty wines with knowledgeable staff, given tasty little bar snacks alongside the wine tasting and a free tour. Would highly recommend for a smaller personable wine tasting experience. They also have a cute dog which roams the grounds.

We bought a bottle of their Vinsanto as it was bottled 2013 the year we met!

this was an incredible experience highlighted by Nadia's, our host, knowledge of not only wine but also the history of santorini and culture overall. We believe she made the experience much better. We recommend to do this one big time, you will not regret it and the wines were incredible, such a good variety and very interesting story behind them.

This was our first stop of the private tour , we did not know a lot about Greek wines and we are usually red wine lovers . The tasting was superb, the information and explanations of winemaking helped us understand and appreciate the wine. Now I have a better appreciation for white wine. (To all my French friends and families I am sorry) after the tour I might be converted on drinking only Santorini white wines from now on :-)

Excellent service and enjoyable experience!! Thank you

We are very grateful to have tasted the best wines of the Santorini region. The welcome was very warm, the tasting of great finesse and tinged with particular attention. We thank life for leading us to this vineyard, and for introducing us to wines that are as sumptuous as they are delicious.
