About
One of Seychelles' two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, this ancient forest is home to the wondrous Coco de Mer palm, which has the largest seed in the world, and many other birds, plants and reptiles, many of which are found nowhere else in the world. Visiting the Vallée de Mai is a step back in time and a unique experience.

    Majestic and expensive park
Rating three only because of the unreasonably high cost of entry: 450 rupees per person. Moreover, you can additionally agree for 1000 rupees for a separate guide. I don’t recommend it, you can watch everything in parallel on the Internet; there are information signs throughout the entire length of the park. At a calm pace we covered absolutely all the trails in 3 hours, there were almost no insects, it was better to wear sneakers. We didn’t find a black parrot, and I had a feeling that he hadn’t lived there for a long time) The park is very majestic, I recommend checking this box. Moreover, all 6 endemic palm trees of the Seychelles are presented here and you will see the famous Coco de Mer from all sides.

    May Valley visit
Nice walk but not essential given the price (30€/person) in a tropical forest Saw a few lizards and two spiders Beware of pseudo guides who appear to accompany you without asking for your consent They are independent and bill you after 1/2 hour visit 20€/person.

    It's worth it
The entrance fee is a little bit steep, but ultimately it's money well invested in various environmental projects. And if you do it, do it properly, i.e. with a private guide (approx. 1.5 hours, around €50). Our guide Joseph was really good, had a lot to tell and explain, and was very friendly and funny. The area is really worth seeing, the flora is simply very impressive.

    Supervised with an Italian guide
It is basically what remains of the endemic palm forests that once probably covered the entire island. We were there for the first time 20 years ago. Luckily it remained practically the same. In addition to plants of all kinds, you can see many endemic animals. Really beautiful and very interesting. I recommend visiting with a guide to learn and understand the geological and climatic processes that led to the current Vallée de Mai. We contacted Vincenzo Tedde. An Italian boy who has lived in the Seychelles for almost 20 years. Vincenzo is a very professional and prepared official guide. We had a great time and recommend anyone wanting to visit this site to contact him on the telephone number +248 2568514. Without him the visit would not have been the same. The Valléee de Mai can be visited without any problem even in case of rain. The palm trees protect you a little from the water and in general getting wet at those temperatures doesn't bother you too much.

    Unmissable...and absolutely with a guide...
A truly beautiful nature park. In my opinion, for the visit you absolutely need a guide and we turned to Vincenzo Tedde, an Italian gentleman who has lived here for eighteen years (you can contact him at the following number +2482568514) Very good and knowledgeable. With his explanations the visit becomes truly exciting... he makes you discover the different types of palm trees and endemic plants, you see animals that we would never have seen if he hadn't let us see them, camouflaged in nature... unmissable...

    to do YES BUT!!!!!
Why the BUT it's simple for a month it's too expensive 450 rupees without a guide You take the guide separately to share the price you have to wait for another group to form and at 500 per person the guide increases the visit even more It’s a magnificent UNESCO-listed park, that’s a reality but we shouldn’t take tourists for cash cows. As I said in my opinion on Fond Ferdinant (because I did both parks) You have to do Ferdinant first, it's cheaper and you have explanations with a guide included in the price then you do the valley of May without the guide AND if you go on the internet to the fond ferdianant site there is a PASS for both parks you will earn 150 rupees too bad you can only have these PASSes on the internet!!!!!! It takes between 1.5 and 2 hours for an independent ride.

    Overrated but not bad.
It is quite overrated, we liked some trails in Mahe and La Digue much more than Vallee de Mai. It is nice to see Coco de mer but it is not the only place where you can do so. If you are tight with time, don’t worry about missing this one.

Unique and interesting walk at an ancient forest
The unique Vallée de Mai is an absolute must see if you visit Praslin in the Seychelles – and UNESCO site and our highlight on this island. We booked one of the personal tour guides (remember to bring cash, they do not accept card) - he had great knowledge about the history of this beautiful place and the unique wildlife, including the male and female Coco de Mer palms – without a guide you’ll miss a lot and we had never have found and seen the black parrots and the many other birds and reptiles without him. The walk is easy (no special footwear is needed) and took about an hour.

Must see and must do with a local guide to get the best out of it.
We enjoyed our visit to Valle De Mai especially thanks to local guide Dora. We highly recommend starting off with a 1hr guided tour and then continuing alone because with no guide, many of the beauties of the place are lost. You will not see all the amazing small animals that are unique and fundamental to the ecosystem. Also, you would never find out how the Coco de Mer palm trees really work. Must see and must do place.

    Praslin....a true paradise ❤️
Staying on the island of Praslin, you could not miss a visit to the Valle de Mai. And reading various reviews I relied on Vincenzo Tedde's Guide and I must say that it was the right thing. He is really prepared without him it would have been a simple walk and instead he explained in detail the history of Praslin of his endemic palms, the famous Coco de mar, sighted all the animals and showed them to us from his camera. The visit was really interesting then took us around the island, with lunch in a typical Creole restaurant stop for a swim in the beautiful Anse Lazio. What about a wonderful day in the beautiful island of Praslin. Thank you Vincenzo

We wanted a bit of culture on our beach holiday and a guided tour of the Valle De Mai was a nice change for an hour or two. We hired a local guide for 1000SCR (around £60) which although quite expensive, it would not have been very educational / informative without so highly reccomended. The onsite cafe doesn't have much for sale so ensure you bring plenty of water with you.

Vallée de Mai is a nice forest to go hiking in. However, the tour guides cost an additional 50 EUR for one hour (entry is about 350 SCR). The tour was ok, however we learned more about the Coco de Mer at Fond Ferdinand. We did see the rare endemic black parrot thanks to the guide though, but overall it wasn’t worth the money. I‘d recommend Fond Ferdinand over Vallée de Mai.

Any visit to Praslin would require a visit to Valle de Mai, one of the last great primeval areas of the Indian Ocean. The forest itself, home to the rare Coco De Mer Tree, is a delight for anyone to visit. Located high into the mountains, there are a few ways to get there: bus, bike, taxi or car rental. There is a small parking lot across the street from the entrance, a small café, gift shop and restrooms at the entrance. Your entrance to the park does not include a guide, if you choose to go that route. We would highly recommend taking a guide as the stories, science, and biodiversity would be lost on us. We were even fortunate in that we were able to view the rare black parrot. If visiting the park, be sure to take lots of water with you as the heat and humidity can be intense. Plan on about 2 hours to do a guided tour and self guided tour.

A great national park with some of the tallest palms I've ever seen, you feel so tiny walking through this jungle, marveling at the giant leaves high up above.

We paid approx. 350 scr for our entry ticket (20 euro), this goes towards the upkeep of the national park, conservation efforts, etc. There are reviews that this is too dear, but it is similar to what you pay at any national park in the US so I found it reasonable.

We also paid separately for a guided tour, hiring Francis for 1000 scr (60 euro) with the cost split between our group of 3. The tour lasted around 1 hour, he talked to us about the part, conservation & history, the animals inside the jungle, and most importantly the coco de mer! Fun and detailed we could stop for a few photos and chat easily!

After the tour you are left in the part to further explore the trails or take photographs.
Without a guide you are simply walking through the jungle, beautiful with without information.

A very interesting and shaded activity, away from the beach and up in the hills for once! Easy level well marked trail, minimal stairs and incline, all levels accessible.

When in Praslin you have to visit this incredible Natural Reserve in order to know the island and its incredible features and plants. Highly suggest to take a guide, in order to fully understand it and be guided through the different paths. You find them directly at the entrance and you pay them separately after getting the tickets. Prices reasonable for the highly informative tour, which lasts about 1h30 , depending also on weather conditions. Really enjoyed it.

Having been informed this attraction was not to be missed, we took a taxi who waited for us at no extra cost (£20 round trip). The entrance fee was expensive £30 for two. There was a guide who was waiting for tourists, and she was also expensive, although we did bargain a little and she reduced her price. Don't bother with a guide, because all she did was walk very slowly explaining the trees and foliage, arriving at a stand with some coco de mer examples to pick up, and all the information she gave us was written there anyway. I wondered why she walked so slowly through the forest; the reason was that very soon after the stand, she left us to wander through the forest. She had said we wouldn't see the black parrot or blue pigeon without her, but we didn't see them with her either. We were really annoyed. We walked for 15 minutes more and got back to the entrance. Total cost about £80. Not worth it, but if you do go bring mosquito spray.

A huge park next to the main road, it's better to visit during morning time because it's cooler weather wise.
The park is very calm and peaceful, and you feel like humans didn't change it at all.
The best thing to see there is the Coco de Mer truies, but you can see all types of tries that you can find only in Seychelles.
You can do the tour on your own, or you can hire a local guide like we did, and it was worth it. And if you want a good guide, ask for Josipha.

The local bus drops you off right at the entrance, we however hired a guide and taxi for the day. The entrance fees are exorbitant. The next day, I found out from a local, that there is another park, that you can visit to see the famed “Coco de Mer”, at a cost of about 150 Seychelles Rupee. There are 3 routes, all less than 3km. We chose to go on our own, without a guide. Most of the way is shaded by the palm leaves. The morning we where there, we spotted the black parrot, the Seychelles bulbul and the Green Day gecko. You can plan to spend between 1-2hrs here.

Thank you for your feedback on your visit to the Vallée de Mai and we are sorry that you felt the entrance fee was too high. These financial contributions are extremely important to SIF and go towards the management and protection of both UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Seychelles, the Vallée de Mai and Aldabra Atoll. The entrance fees also go towards the operation of the Vallée de Mai visitor centre and the facilities that are available there such as the café, souvenir shop, toilets, lockers, car park, free visitor guide, and free guided tours.

We were very excited for our visit to the Nature Reserve since it’s a Unesco World Heritage site. We were a bit taken aback with the SCR 350 per person entrance fee but thought we would try it out since it’s a once in a lifetime experience. We were sorely disappointed. The reserve is very badly maintained - trees fallen everywhere, path isn’t maintained properly, the North path had a palm tree fallen across it so we had to walk back to the Central Path again. Give it a miss since it isn’t worth it - the time or the money. Rather, drive around the reserve and see the same palm trees from outside.
