Crete’s aquarium, Cretaquarium, opened in December 2005. Belonging to a large European family of aquariums, the Cretaquarium offers its visitors the unique chance to plunge into the great marine world of the Mediterranean. From the big hunter sharks to the tiny seahorses, the sensational jellyfish, the diversity of marine life is set off against underwater Cretan seascapes such as the rock formations at Matala( South Crete)and the sea bed at Vai(North East Crete).

This is an interesting place to visit, especially for kids. You can spend around 2 hours watching a lot of kinds of fishes, even big sharks swimming behind the aquarium glasses next to you. Kids are really amazed by the site! Aquarium restaurant can do a lot better, even if the staff is very friendly...

It may not be the largest of the world but still it is beautufully organised and is a great place for adults and children. Also, for those who want to listen to guide and to more information, there is the option of renting headphones and listen to particular details, as an extra.

A superb aquarium with 60 tanks, well laid out. Plenty of different marine species to see. Some very large tanks with the usual sharks etc. Nice clean new building, bit of a walk in the heat from the main road bus stop. Plenty of taxis waiting to whisk you away if you don't fancy the walk back to the bus... More

Fabulous, the tanks seem nice and large for the fish, with big viewing areas so you don't have to fight for space to see the fish. There was a huge variety of fish on display. I loved the gallery style seats where you could just sit and watch the fish. Despite the temptation for children to rush through from one... More

My 11 year old son and I visited the aquarium, we were unsure whether to go due to mixed reviews. However we had a thoroughly enjoyable and informative 3 hours spent there. Unlike several other reviews we would recommend the audio guide, without it your visit would be much shorter as the written information about the animals is minimal- it's... More

Agree with some of the comments of other reviwers regarding the size (it could have been bigger). However you have the chance to spend some time next to really big sea creatures. We have visited the aquariums in Copenhagen and Berlin; they might be bigger in size but not so many big fish (at least to the best of my... More
