This is one of the lesser known canyons. We started at the taverna. It was not always easy to find our way. Luckily a downloaded a gpx route.
The first half of the trip was marked with red and white ribbon. The second half of the road was a little more freestyle and rocky.
We walked 14 km until we were at the cost. A taxi picket us up and brought us to a hotel.
In our opinion is the route not fit for children.

Beautiful hike that did not take too long, quite doable for most people but good shoes are reccommended. Not very clear indication of the path, this caused some confusion. Start the trail across the bridge from the Xero Kamares Taverna and take your time to have a meal there, the food is great!

Me and my Girlfriend decided to trek the gorge north to south in lovely 30’c heat and clear skies. At end of August the gorge appears bone dry despite Rich green walls and dense greenery throughout the centre. The trail appears to be previous riverbed and is made up of challenging boulders and tricky to walk rubble surface. Expect climbing. Taking time to consider your best route. Planning is best scheduled morning to late afternoon regardless of heat you would not want to be traversing this gorge in the shadow of the gorge or diminished daylight. I often take my children hiking and would of turned around early on if I had them with me. As a athletic couple this will remain an enjoyable memory and it was topped with a rewarding meal on the south exit of the canyon at Taverna Xerokameres making the trek even more worthwhile.
Definitely bring water. Expect 2-4 hours traversing the gorge. Expect to wonder if its possible to keep going.
A sat nav despite lack of signal most of the gorge was very useful and reassuring in pressing further into the gorge and of course if you wish for a taxi following much raki at the Taverna. Additional note my girlfriend reflected she would of felt a lot better if we had a guide for the trek. 😂. Having never done the gorge before there was a lot of guessing the way. There was 2 particular gates that gave the impression that we should of not been travelling through however they seemed to move with no tribulation.

Definitely worth to pass through. We started at 9 a.m. and not too hot in October. Look carefully where you step, lots of open stone. We used Eye Travel help to get there. Not very easily findable.

We walked from the beach to the far end of the canon near the 92 road which took a good 3-4 hours. In the middle it's quite tough going, you have to climb over a lot of boulders, some the size of cars, so you need to be in decent shape but I wouldn't say it's difficult for anyone who enjoys sport or the outdoors.
You can't really get lost because the canyon walls guide you but we did get stumped by a fence blocking the path for a few minutes. To the side it turns out there is a very basic gate which you open by grabbing the steelwork and pulling it apart, at a glance it's not obvious that it's a gate at all!
The views great and there is plenty of wildlife, you definitely feel that you are off the beaten track. We only saw one other group during the whole journey so again, be a bit careful because a sprained ankle could ruin your day as there aren't others to help and it could only be accessed by helicopter.
It gives a good sense of achievement and a nice break from urban life.

an easier option to samaria as its a half day tour. Some scrambling and climbing around large boulders required.

After a fairly long dirt road drive, you follow the river bed up stream over rounded rocks with stunning rock formations all around you, beautiful scenery, wildlife and plants all around. Take a small picnic with you and plenty of water and a cell-phone just for emergencies. We went there with 4 children from 4 to 14 and really enjoyed the active afternoon out. Best to go after 4pm so the return is a little cooler.

I have cross aposelemis gorge a couple of times. Weather changes the canyon a little bit every year, so I go with my friends and wife for a hike and maybe BBQ when we are free.
It is definitely not an unforgettable gorge to visit but is easy, quick and it has no traces or route. You have to improvise and follow your instincts.

Difficult to get to the start of the gorge. I gave up after a hundred yards or so since I simply could not see the way. I think I should have climbed over more big rocks.

We thought it would be a great experience to walk this gorge. The starting point was difficult to find because they are working on the road. But eventually we found it. On the road in good spirits! The first part was easy to do, quite reasonably marked with red/white ribbon. After about 3 km the tour becomes a bit more difficult and involves scrambling along the bed. The tour can still be easily followed at that time via ribbon in the trees and stones with red/white. We have now traveled 5 km, the stones indicate that we are on the right path. But not a single red/white ribbon or red/white stones. According to the GPS we have to follow the bed, we do this, but it becomes increasingly difficult and since our internet is also gone and we don't see any sign of a route (red/white ribbon) we decide to walk back. We don't want to take unnecessary risks. We walk the route back to the starting point.
Our experience is, although the nature there is very beautiful... that the route is NOT well marked. Remember this if you go on this trip... and take enough water with you.

Ik wil deze canyon graag lopen. Waar kan ik het beste starten als ik van landinwaarts naar de kust wil lopen? ik lees meermaals dat het begin vinden lastig is.

Can you do this walk without a guide?
Written December 9, 2016
Yes it is easy to find using Google maps and once you get started you can't get lost because you just follow the dried up riverbed the whole way
