It is quite rare to have a painted outdoor Buddha so this is a hugely impressive sight. You can also go inside the temple and see all the paintings and carvings, not just look at the statue. There are also a number of fruit vendors that line the walk entrance, since it is customary to give a food offering to Buddha when visiting. This makes the place a joyful riot of colour. I went early morning before 10am and it wasn't too hot and no crowds.

Visited on 21 February 2020 on Maha Shiv Ratri
From the main square take a tuk tuk/ auto at SLR 300/- to and fro to this attraction. distance about 3-4 kms.
This is an impressive place with mixed architecture and a grad statute of Lord Buddha meditating. The place has temples of many Hindu gods and goddesses as well and due to the auspicious day it was crowded.
We offered puja at the place and spend some peaceful time at this temple complex.
The temple complex is a definite visit to the tourist visiting Bentota.
Om Namah Shivay!
Buddham Sharam Gacchami!

We had a short trip to this beautiful temple not far from Kalutara. Although not the least bit religious myself, I enjoyed the atmosphere, architecture and ambience of this place. I enjoyed learning the history of the temple, it’s part in the 2004 tsunami and the story of Siddhartha Gautama. Our visit was organised by Freddy of Freddy Tours in Kalutara +94 77 63 49248. Freddy is a charming, informative guide who put together several days out for us and I would highly recommend him.

Very interesting temple spoilt by the mistreatment of an elephant. The same elephant I saw 2 years ago is still chained to the same spot. It is embarrassing that a Buddhist temple would treat an animal in this way. If Buddha were there he would be appalled at the lack of compassion (metta) shown by the Sangha of the temple. I felt like I would wish I was able to release the poor animal from it's suffering.

Memorable temple to visit. It’s situated on a hill and the temple and Buddha are stunning. Easy access from Kalutara and Bentota by Tuk Tuk ride. We went with Pradeep from Freddy Tours +94 77 634 9248 (WhatsApp). He is a cheerful and friendly tour guide. He has good knowledge of the local area and speaks good English. Very accommodating and ensured we had a pleasant journey.

This temple is an appalling example of animal cruelty. both temple elephants are constantly chained up by not only their front leg but also their back leg so they have virtually no movement. The animals look severely distressed it is one of the saddest things i have ever seen. i cannot believe that Buddhist monks who are usually very kind and respectful to animals could treat elephants like this. Shame shame shame on you

There is a giant Buddha Statue in this beautiful temple. Kande Viharaya was formally recognized as an archaeological site of Sri Lanka.
