A stadium in perfect condition, with the reconstructed colonnade crowning it. The view from it is fantastic.

A great example of a person to be perfect, you need to constantly train the body, mind and spirit. In a small space, there was everything necessary for human education.
Good comfortable shoes and water are needed to see everything.

One of the best preserved ancient sites in Greece. The stadium and mausoleum in particular interested me, however the flooring mosaics are beautiful. Overall just the age of this place dating back pre BC and the condition of the relics is impressive.

Our only criticism is that brochure handed out when collecting the entrance ticket is unprofessional. It's easily fixed by having a simple map of the trails to follow with a shirt explanation of each stop spot in the area.

Absolutely worth the visit and good value for money

Really gives you the sense of a stadium with its rows of seats and the lovely Roman mausoleum at one end.

The site is massive, consisting of the gymnasium, theatre, market place and temple all set against spectacular scenery. For 12 euros, you get access here, as well as the museum. Afterwards you can drive into the village just up the road for some fantastic food. Not very busy in late June. Hot with little shade and lots of walking so bring water. Bringing a guide book in advance would be a good idea as there aren't any available (although it does seem possible to book tours in advance). It might not be suitable for very young children as terrain is a little rough and there is lots of walking involved.

We had seen Ephesus, The Acropolis, Delphi and Olympia before this but this is the most impressive stadium-gymnasium complex in the Aegean. Ephesus is larger and is packed with temples but we walked downhill from the upper entrance there. The sights here are spread out over a long walk first down hill and then back up. But well worth it. Here you can actually get a sense of how the athletes lived, how fans, politicians and celebrities seeking to promote themselves used them and a little glimpse into how Greek and then Roman society functioned.

It is not well posted with reader boards; there are no audio guides and we saw only one guide on site. Come well read or hire him.

One of the most impressive stadia I've been in my life, though I was very young when I visited Olympia ;) I didn't want to leave the place, took thousands of pictures and want to visit it again!

The Stadium in Ancient Messenia is so huge and so well preserved, that if it wouldn't be in a hardly approachable remote area, up in the mountainside, probably would outshine Olympia. Still, numerous columns are surrounding the nearly intact Stadium. Walking around you can notice interesting details. For example remaining VIP seats, with backrests, standing on lion paw legs, and also advertising the high culture of this people, a row of public toilets. Of course, these toilets were nothing like the current ones, they were only round holes in stone slabs, but they were positioned above a stream, that immediately washed the " product" away. Now, the water disappeared from the stream, together with the people who were served by it. No athletic games here anymore and the gymnasium only visited by a few interested tourist, who doesn't mind the long drive to enjoy the ambiance of this impressive stadium.

This is a splendid site in which you could loose yourselves for four hours easily; it is well displayed and signed with a wide range of Greek and Roman ruins - some of artefacts which we have never seen before. The setting is marvellous.
