My wife and I thought that we would try the train to see a little more of the surrounding area. You do see a little of the area but the train has a very short route, they just make it last. The museum is just a run down she’d fill with junk, there is no attempt to pressure or protect anything so anything of interest or value is left to deteriorate. Lunch at taverna was just a means of extracting some more cash from you the taverna is a run down dump and unlike any other taverna I have visited on my last two visits to Zante. The only upside was the guide Paul who was both knowledgable and amusing. If you still choose to buy a ticket remember, you have been warned.

From previous visits to alykes we saw ‘The Train’ but never took up the opportunity however this time we did, first on a day visit to the museum and lunch at the taverna. This was a lovely ride in the Greek countryside with Paul as our guide, and what a great man he is, a font of knowledge and a sense of humour second to none. However because we enjoyed the day visit so much we signed up to the ‘Greek Night’ at the same taverna once again with the very energetic and bubbly Paul (who is a credit to whoever employs him) We were seated outside the taverna and were inundated with small wasps which somewhat spoiled the meal, hey ho you probably expect that where we were BUT for the first time I entered the inner taverna to find an absolutely disgusting, disgraceful toilet the likes I’ve never seen before (and believe you me I’ve seen some toilets in my time) it was horrific and I’m not exaggerating Similarly the stand alone fridge containing water and wine was rusty and filthy, unbelievable I feel for Paul who tried his best but I can only assume he’s doing what he’s told to and no fault lies with him to the contrary he was very professional So whoever owns the place clean it up please because it’s utterly utterly disgusting

After being on this trip in 2019 we so enjoyed the experience we booked straight away when we arrived in Alykanas. The guide Paul is a font of knowledge his enthusiasm is outstanding but it seems to fall apart when we leave the church and go into the taverna, the toilets and eating area are a disgrace such a pity. A great experience spoilt at the end. The ride back is fab, people full of wine waving at everyone we pass.

A must trip finally did it the other year after years of watching the train go by, good fun day out with plenty to see and finishing up at a very wacky restaurant with great food.
