About
Vinhos Barbeito entered the wine business in 1946, during a particularly dark time for Madeira. During World War II, production and sales had ground to a virtual halt. As a result, far more companies were leaving the business than were joining. But Mario Barbeito had faith in the future. He also believed that the value of great Madeira could only go up as it became older and production of young vintages declined. But while Barbeito saw those vintage wines as a nest egg for the future, he was content to let the wines age. He wisely built the business in the early years around more modest Madeiras. It was left to his daughter Manuela - when she gradually took over the business from him in the 1970s to continue his work. In the mid 1990s, Manuela Barbeito began to turn over the reins of the company to her son Ricardo Freitas. He not only brought a deep respect for Madeira's classical roots, but also brought new energy and new ideas to the company. One of these ideas was to restore the role that Madeira once had as a companion of food. Ricardo is continuing his grandfather's and mother's legacy of making wines and preserving them for future generations. But he is also creating his own legacy: a series of Madeiras he calls his "Signature" wines. These handcrafted wines combine the best elements of Madeira's classical tradition with Ricardo's own quest for purity and vineyard and varietal expression. Made in tiny lots, their astonishingly graceful style has prompted British wine critic Jancis Robinson to call Barbeito the "Lafite of Madeira".

Visited as part of a Jet2 excursion. I’ve visited a number of Madeira producers before in Madeira such as Blandy’s but never Barbeito.
Really interesting tour - you see the factory elements which you don’t often get on other tours. The highlight is the tasting as the 5 yr old medium dry Barbeito rainwater is something else. Totally unlike other Madeira’s I’ve tried from Blandy’s & D’OLIVEIRAS thanks to their unique production methods. It’s a taste sensation & we snapped up a couple of bottles at the airport. Leandro wasn’t available when we visited so thank you to the young woman who stepped in it was really interesting.

Leandro gave us a wonderful tour and tasting - very highly recommended. Wines tasted from 15 to 350 euros a bottle, all included in the very reasonable 20 euro price. Well worth the trip out from Funchal.

Legendary tour guide. He’s very friendly, well informed and funny.
The tasting was great, he presented us a fine selection of different wines and provided us with the necessary info. There is no purchase obligation, but after the tasting you just want to take home some of the wines you tried. Totally worth a visit!

Having researched the other wineries to visit we decided to walk to the one closet to us using one of the Levada walks. We were not disappointed. Leandro provided us with a very informative tour around the premises and educated our palates with a good range of sweetnesses and ages of Madeira. We can certainly recommend a visit to Barbeito.

Loved it here ❤️, the guide did an amazing job. It's one of the best things you can do while it's raining. I've tried some great wines (including 20, 15y.o ones) gained some knowledge on how madeira wine is being made. Degustation encouraged me to buy some 2008 colheita with lovely dried apricots note.

You should definitely go to have a winetour and a tasting in Barbeito. They are really friendly and offer very good wines even older ones in the tasting. The tour is short but interesting. Thank you.

Up in the hills above Camera do Lobos you will find Barbeito.You will need a car or taxi to get up there
I booked a tour and found it just excellent. Less busy than Blandys but treated to better vintages.
Do buy from here as the rip off so called Duty Free at the airport charges about 35% more!!
Unfortunately we were restricted travelling with hand luggage only.
The 2007 single harvest tinta negra medium dry is simply divine.

Visiting The Barbeitos Winery is always an adventure. Far up in the steep slopes above Camaro de Lobos with a stunning view, you could be surprised with the most unexpected tastings. This time we were offered cask samples of four different grapes before the oxidation process had started! Most interesting. After followed ready wines of different styles from medium dry to full sweet richness and even different ages.

This visit was out of the blue. Weather was a little inclement. A quick scan through Trip Adviser for a vine yard visit came up trumps. A welcome from ‘Leonandro’ (I think that’s how it’s spelt). Should really have booked a guided tour but the cold call turned out to be a great couple of hours being shown around the facility. The Madeira wine tasting was enlightening and delicious too. Well worth the time when the weather is a little cloudy and cool. Remember to book though ......

Thank you Barbeito and Leandro for such a fabulous tour of the winery. My family and I were all keen to understand more about Madeira wine as we drink it when on holiday. I found that Barbeito offer factory tours so I emailed and asked if they could fit us in. Tours are popular so I wasnt very hopeful but at great personal inconvenience Leandro offered to fit us in at short notice. He is so knowledgeable about his wines and so tuned into what we would like being from Scotland. The wines were amazing and we tried plenty. Every one of them was amazing. We drank all the samples - cant waste quality products. Home safely with some fine wines including a very special one for husband. Hes not opened it yet- just sits and looks at it admiringly. Will it last long? I doubt it but we will definitely be back for more.
