- David DDevon, United Kingdom28,130 contributionsSmall, impressive scenery, worth walking aroundMonday 11th September and we visited the coastal town of Câmara de Lobos. It is located on the south-central coast of Madeira between Ribeira Brava and Funchal. The harbour sists in a bay protected on both sides by cliffs and rugged coastline. On one side of the bay is the Faro, lighthouse while on the other is cliff top Miradouro do Salão Ideal. A variety of colourful small boats were anchored up in the Bay and many more were rested up on the concrete slipway in the harbour. Câmara de Lobos is renown for it's street art and facinating recycled plastic decorations, which are also suspended around the harbour. From the Harbour we climbed the many steps up to the coastal path leading to Miradouro do Salão Ideal. From the viewpoint there were superb views across the harbour and the Bay. There are numerous bars and restaurants around the harbour and surrounding area.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 7, 2023
- Karen TWales, United Kingdom26 contributionsWatching the world go by....Stunning fishing village, so vibrant and full of life. Loved the full size bronze sculpture of Winston Churchill and the recycled wall and street art. Beautiful churches, modest and plain on the outside yet so beautiful and peaceful on the inside.Visited November 2023Traveled soloWritten November 17, 2023
- Cherriesfan99Cheltenham, United Kingdom2,265 contributionsThis little village has charm in spades, and visitors.Very attractive small fishing village, close and very accessable from Funchal. Unfortunately , that is the problem. The place is packed, all the restaurants full, and coach loads of tourist straight from the cruise ship just mooching around looking for something to do. Which is a pity as this little village has charm in spades, and visitors.Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 8, 2023

We took the bus from Funchal to Camara de Lobos, which was a relatively short journey. The village has a lovely little bay surrounded mainly by restaurants and shops but there is also a quaint fisherman's chapel. Several small fishing boats line the beach as well as being moored in the bay. From this village you can pick up the little green train taking you up the mountain to the glass viewing platform. There is a life-size bronze of Winston Churchill outside one of the hotels overlooking the bay. He is sitting in a (bronze) wicker chair, smoking a cigar and painting with an easel in front of him. There is a spare bronze wicker chair beside him so tourists can sit beside him. This statue is apparently a tribute to when Churchill stayed in Camara de Lobos back in 1950. Lovely village to explore but would not need an entire day.

Well worth a visit if you are in Funchal. We took the number 3 bus (1.98 euros) from the Miramar Hotel and it took about 20 mins. It does drop you off near the promenade and it is a short walk to the village. There are other buses that do this route. The village is a traditional fishing village, picturesque with plenty of bars/restaurants for refreshments. Some great photo opportunities, but be prepared to walk some steep paths. We decided to walk back along the promenade to Funchal, but as the "tunnel" was closed this caused a detour up some very steep streets. It took about an hour and a half to get back.

One of the most typical and charming sights
Have used the bus from Funchal and only took 15'.
Had no idea that Churchill used the nice views for panting.
Zarco's have used the bay as refuge during the years that the fire had laid waste of Madeira.
The famous Black Sward Fish, are fished in these areas.

It is possible to walk here from Funchal, but we got the municipal bus 1 and walked the last 10 minutes..number 3 bus also goes there but it is a circuitous trip. Also another bus company goes there.once there find a seat at a bar and enjoy the various views. If you choose to use a city municipal bus it is best to get a day ticket for 5 euros and this gives unlimited travel within the city,Available at various newsagents and remember to validate on every trip.

It's a fun little bay. We made a pit stop because it was on our west-coast bus tour. It has some fantastic decorations made from recycled materials and it is one of many displays on the island to help fight plastic pollution in the ocean. It was also a favourite spot of Churchill, so you can see his sculpture there as well.

Amazing little harbor.
Old fishermen sitting around playing cards all day.
Decorations made from plastic waste.
Apparently this is the harbor that Winston Churchill painted .... and is still honoured here.

We came here for a holiday staying in one of the apartments just out of the main town, thankfully. The place is frequented by many beggars and men who seem to have nothing to do apart from hanging around. We don’t feel it’s safe to eat out at night so will have to be content with restaurants at lunchtime.
There are frequent buses to Funchal and up into the hills. A car is recommended.

Beautiful little fishing port in the bay of Lobos, formed by steep Vuklkan rocks. Here the traditional fishing boats lie in the water and on the beach.
Around the harbour basin many restaurants, but also the place is very worth seeing, with its many narrow streets.
There is a lot of plastic street art that is fished out of the sea.
Very busy tourist, but still romantic.

Walked from Old Funchal as Sunday buses iffy. (Caught one for final half of way back as more availability near Forum)
2hrs (give or take a dilly dally on the way) Slightly undulating
Avenue Infante,Estrada Monumental, past Reids Hotel ,drop down to the beach at Praia De Formosa just before sharp left hand bend there is a road going underneath.
Walkway at high tide level then follows around all the way to this little fishing village.
Past a cement factory and jetty.
Public (acceptably clean) toilets available at Praia De Formosa.
Water fountain at harbour in the village.
