We had a lovely visit here learning how traditional Portuguese tiles are made. The people were very nice. We choose some beautiful tiles to bring home from their shop.
If you enjoy seeing all the beautiful tile work in Portugal and are curious about how it is made, this is an interesting place to stop for a short visit while you are in the region. The national tile museum in Lisbon is also excellent if you want to go deeper into the history of azulejos.

We had a tour while on an OAT/Grand Circle trip. This was a highlight of our trip! They explained the handmade process they use to make the tiles, the same as has been done for centuries (except they do use an electric cutter). It was interesting to learn that the tiles that are air dried will last much longer than dried by machinery - half a century vs a hundred or so years! They paint them all by hand!
We were able to paint our own tiles, which is so very much harder than it would seem! I didn’t finish so we didn’t have them fired/returned to us.
The souvenir shop was such a treat! We barely buy anything on our trips, and if we do, it would be one that has significant emotional value. For this trip through Spain and Portugal, we found the one we had to have - they had a small bin of original tiles from before the USA actually existed! Such a unique thing to come home with. Note that they do not tear these out of homes and buildings haphazardly - it is only the ones that are unable to be restored. This meant so much to us to bring home something with a full life of history of its own.
I definitely suggest a tour and bringing home a piece of history with your heart like we did!

Superb experience in this artisanal azulejo factory. We started with a very interesting visit in French then we carried out a painting workshop on our own azulejo which we came to collect a few days later once cooked. The whole family loved it ! Thank you very much for the welcome.

We went as a couple after our host recommended the place. The presentation answered several questions we had about azulejos. We went all through the boutique and changed our minds 5 times and came away with the loveliest (we think) of panel for our home. We could not have found a better souvenir.

Several clients told me they would like to see Portuguese Tiles being made. Since Azeitão is one of my favorite places show around I decided to visit this small factory before I show it to anyone else. Mr Luis Oliveira is a friendly host who shows and explains some techniques of handmade tiles in a very simple way. From now on I expect to go there very often.

This is a late review, but it was a very nice stop in the area. The tile making & painting demonstration was interesting, and the people who work there are really friendly and knowledgeable. Recommended!

We showed up and got nice explanation about the tiles. We also made 2 tiles that you can pick up the next day since they need to be backed and glazed. For 11 eur a bargain to have a unique souvenir! Staff is very friendly and takes all the time to explain and I for you.

We enjoyed the tour through the Portuguese tile factory. It is a small home business environment. You get a free walk through tile tour; and then you can make a tile yourself for 11 euros and pick it up the next day. Or if you dont have the time to make the tile at least you can pick up some great hand made tiles as a memory and as gifts. It is worth seeing if you are in the area.

After viewing so many buildings in Portugal adorned in lovely tiles, it was so nice to see the process of how these tiles are made. The craftsmanship and artistry was amazing to watch. We had a nice tour of their small facility that produces many, many tiles. A great visit.

Can I participate in an individual tile workshop there or do I have to make reservations with an organisation (like aroundlisbon.pt) to make my own tile?

Hello Charlotte
You can dial directly from the factory.
Thank you
