This is a lovely and fascinating tile factory in Azeitao, Portugal, which is a charming little town in its own right.
I just walked in and was greeted by Telma, who gave me a super-interesting tour in her perfect English. You can see exactly how the tiles are made and painted by hand in the traditional style. This place gives tile-making workshops as well, by appointment, for groups up to 10 people. There they teach the whole process, from making the clay, to firing in the kiln, to painting and glazing. Participants can take with them their own tile that they made. Telma was a charming guide and I loved my visit!

This is a talent and skill of love that is fading away. Here you visit the studio where hand painted and hand crafted tiles are made the way that it has been done for centuries. No factory and no stickers just fabulous talent. A tour of the entire process from the making baking of the tile to artist painting. Excellent quality and excellent design. Very much appreciated the opportunity to stop here. Add this to your list.

This place was recommended by the Tourist Information Center and it did not disappoint. We were given a free tour in English of the custom tile making process. It was very informative and interesting. This place makes thousands of tile by hand each year and it was interesting to see how it was done. You can also buy tiles or special order ones of your own design.

I was a little apprehensive going here but it was well worth my time. The guide was not too strong on his English so our tour guide interpreted. He gave members of our tour an opportunity to actually make a tile which was cool. They have an excellent gift shop and many in our group made purchases. We were on a bus tour and taken to this tile workshop, we were unsure if we would like it or be interested but found it very interesting and glad we went. The owner/manager spoke good English and explained the process from start to finish. All work is still carried out by hand. The workmanship is very good and a number of us on the tour purchased tiles to take home. They are well know for their tiles and craft and have produced a number of large pieces around the world.

I found this place on Tripadvisor, and went with 2 of my foreign friends (english speaking). I couldn't be happier, the tour was free, the "boss" was the one giving the tour and showing us everything, he spoke portuguese, but knew the technical english terms and waited for me to translate what he said to my friends, although there was a painter that spoke English very well there. It's perfect if you are close by, and you can paint your own mosaic and get it on the next day already done, for a small price. Remember, this is one of the few places in the world where they do the whole process by hand, so it's quite worth seeing as you probably won't see it anywhere else. Although it was free, I bough 2 small mosaics because I was so happy with the quality of the tour.

We enjoyed a Royal Caribbean cruise that stopped in the Port of Lisbon, Portugal. A stop along the way after visiting a nearby winery. Very interesting tour and explanation of tile making. We were able to purchase a tile for our home.
