This lake is approximately a 15 minute hike down from where you can leave your car. We were the only people there and it was a lovely experience to sit by the waters and hear nothing but birdsong. Parking/access may be trickier if there were...More

This lake isn’t easy to reach. You’ll have to hike half an hour to get there. If it has rained, it can be quite a slippery way down. In the end you will be treated to a very beautiful and peaceful scenery. We loved it!

This is a small lake, a peaceful quiet place. Follow the signs towards Furnas if you come from the southern highway. Then there are signs towards Lagoa do Congro. Last part is a narrow dirt road so I stopped first opportunity where some other cars...More

This is the most beautiful volcanic lake on the island. A very must. Even though the trip is on a dirt road, it’s just for a short while. The walk to the location is a beautiful nature walk with great photo opportunities.

One of our favourite stops on the island. Easy to find with google maps and well signposted. Lovely walk down through the woods about 15-20 minutes to the lake. So serene and peaceful we loved it here. The water is so clear you can see...More

This lake used to be one that was “off the beaten path”, but as with the rest of the attractions on São Miguel, tourism regrettably seems to have caught up with Lagoa do Congro as well... The advantage of that is that directions to the...More

There is so much to see on Sao Miguel, and you may miss this beauty.... We came across a small sign to the lake whilst driving. Following the sign, over a slightly bumpy road, we then walked down a wonderful and well maintained path through...More

Travelled with 9 & 12 year old boys and they enjoyed every minute walking in the forest and then to reach the emerald lake was stunning!
