    Worth the stop
It was very windy when we stopped so we didnt stay long but the views of the ocean and the towering cliffs was beautiful. You enter through a path and the area has a well maintained garden with flowers, plants, trees, picnic tables, and even a sink for washing up. We would have stayed longer but didn't want to get blown over.

    Beautiful Vista Point/Garden
To call this place just a vista point does not give its due justice... it's almost like a mini botanical garden - to the point that I honestly don't recall the "vistas" from here as I got so absorbed just wandering around. My fav thing here was the palm tree that was overgrowing with beautiful colorful flowers - AMAZING! Looked like an amazing place for a picnic/quick bite stop - though no food in the area to buy so make sure to bring yours in advance. TIP: this is a big deal stop even for buses with bigger groups so at times they may take over certain parts of it, like they did during our visit, but that's the beauty of this place, there is still plenty of other areas you can have all to yourself

Stunning vistas - worth a stop
Gorgeous viewpoint with beautiful gardens and stunning vistas! Just park along the road if the parking spots are full. Be sure to also visit Miradauro da Ponta da Madrugada which is just a few minutes down the road and similarly gorgeous!

Ponta do Sossego is not far south of Nordeste (quite far from Povoacao). The south-east coastal route from Nordeste is beautiful with dramatic scenery. We took our time and stopped at a number of lookouts such as this one. The gardens are beautiful and manicured, it's a perfect place for a packed lunch with seats to sit and enjoy, and the ocean-side cliff scenery is spectacular. Of course it is best on a clear day for great visibility and photos. If you like cats, there are some hungry cats here - please be kind to them if you can. (We took them meat from our hotel breakfast buffet.)

Eastern Coastal Route: A winding and visually stunning route from Nordeste to Povoacao. First stop (for the fit who don't mind a very steep descent and climb) is Ponta Arnel. You can't take the car down... do this on foot and go as far down as you like because this 'road' takes you down the height of the immense volcanic cliff to the sea. Next stop (for those those want to see the lighthouse but avoid the hike) is Ponta Marquesa - great photo ops on a clear day. Next is this view and gardens... Ponta do Sossego. Further along you will find Ponta da Madrugada... gorgeous garden again and worth stopping. We took the drive slowly to take in the views and really enjoyed the trip! We stuck to the primary roads, but if you follow the secondary roads there are some great off-route views towards the south-east corner of Sao Miguel before turning west towards Povoacao. Did this help you?

just driving around the peripheral road on the island, which is by the way very well maintained, you see numerous miradouro's or viewpoints. Stop at many of them. They are all gorgeous, many have very clean free bathrooms (a super kudo to the azores for this....no fees, and very clean and abundant). This was breathtaking. And another plus for the Azores...the roads, while stupendous and breathtaking in spots, are also well maintained and have....sit down....really substantial guard rails and are not precariously perched on cliffs. We went to the Canaries last year and some of the mountain roads had little blocks...MAYBE a foot tall and a couple feet long...lining the roads...with cliffs on othe other side...could be a bit intimidating. Well, the views on sao miguel were the equal of Tenerife but the pucker factor was missing. Just saying. Well done, Portugal.

The views in Azores Islands are all very beautiful but the view from this specific spot was doubtless the most amazing one with pink azaleas to match the turquoise of the ocean and the green of the slopes. Once in Nordeste, you should definitely pay a visit to this place. You can bring your own food and have a sort of picnic with this breathtaking view. There is a parking lot in front of it. Definitely a must visit in Azores.

The views at this viewpoint are absolutely stunning. It is a must stop visit for sure. The scenery is incredible. Just greenery everywhere and cliff views. Pictures do not do this place justice. You have to see it in person.

Wonderful rest area and a perfect place for a picnic. Well kept gardens and beautiful views all around. At the entrance one can purchase ice creams and soft drinks. At the end of the gardens (a few steps down) are bathrooms. Important to know for those in need.

Firstly the road from Nordeste is not as good as you would like it to be. It’s fine, wide, but broken and bumpy in places. But stick with it! It looks like some road works and improvements are taking place currently on the road.

This has to be one of the best hidden gems on the whole island.
Th gardens are apparently tended by local volunteers and they are amazing. Well kept, very neat and tidy and a pleasure to wander around - I hope the locals are proud of this place as it really is wonderful.

The views are also amazing. Perched on the cliff edge, they have some great views up and down the coast.

Parking was easy, the location was very quiet, maybe as it’s too far for many trips coming out of Ponta Delgada, but I would definitely recommend a visit.

Lots of picnic benches in the park - a great location to watch the sun rise, have a midday break or just wander and chill out for a little while.

Did consider not writing a review, as this place really does need to stay special, but the efforts of the team who keep the gardens so tidy need to be recognised.

I think the best part of my trip to Sao Miguel was driving along the coast from Nordeste to Povoacao and stopping at all the scenic overlooks to take in the amazing view. Rent a car, drive the coast, you won't be disappointed. This particular overlook has a really well-manicured garden and is home to a bunch of cats.
