If you fancy a drive into a forest, then this is for you! We drove from south to north on the yellow road marked on the tourist map. I think it is slightly easier that way as the starting point is clear. We got a little lost at the north end where the starting point was less clear (to me anyway!). The road is gravel but in a reasonable state so any hire car will make it. To be on the safe side don't drive over 50kmph and hope you don't meet anything coming the other way!!!
The route is covered by Japanese cedars. Stop and breath in the lovely fresh air and pine smell.
Because of the slower speed it takes a long time (about an hour) to drive the length of it and you need to have your wits about you. An interesting diversion from the parallel tarmac road which is not in the best of conditions anyway.

Just back from an incredible drive . I stumbled upon this pretty much by accident . I simply followed the signs from Nordeste , I just thought I was going to another view point but WOW this is so much more. I went on my own in a hire car (just a compact size , clio ) so nothing fancy and I made it (the car is pretty dirty mind you )
The road is a dirt track in good condition though I did question myself many times while doing this drive. However it was spectacular . The drive is actually more breath taking than the actual view point though to be fair it was cloudy when I got there.
If you want an adventure then do this drive , Or if you are super fit , hire a mountain bike , it would be a fantastic bike ride.
Another reason to fall in love with this island. Sao Miguel is stunning and has so much to offer.

Tronqueira is one of the first restaurants I ate at in Nordeste(and the island). The food is always great and service is pretty good. The prices are good as well. The shark steak is a must try. Also, a nice treat is the bread and cheese with pimento as a starter for everyone.....don't be alarmed when the 2 Euro's is on the bill at the end for it.........it's normal in all of Sao Miguel....besides, its $3 for a loaf of bread, an entire tub of goats cheese and pimento.....wow!!

Our objective in going to this site was very specific.
We wanted to get a close up view and photos of the celebrated Azores Bullfinch. We had seen a flock on a quick trip to Sao Miguel. But they were far away and photos were subpar.
But we hit the mark this time. Though it was only one bird, he was reasonably close and I got off a few shots that are acceptably clear.
It's a lovely drive and very aromatic. We walked part of the way to take in the aromas and see other living things along the road.
We would return to this site without a doubt.

We reached this area in a four wheel Jeep and it was an amazing journey through the most interesting nature. The aromatic smell of cedar forest is unforgettable. Very rich plant life everywhere.

The most incredible views ever! It requires a long drive up to the viewpoint, but the drive itself is also stunning. Make sure to drive all the way out to the little house as the drive is amazing!

To visite this área you must do it on a four wheel car there are some companies that do it. It is most of the time off-road and ona mountain with lots of forest and offcourse tree with beautiful views to the ocean and to the mountain. If you love nature and outdoors then you should visit ths área.
