This museum is a hidden gem in Sao Bras de Alportel. Housed in the home of a former cork magnate, the museum lays out the history of the cork industry and its effect on the towns and people of the Algarve. We parked in the adjacent lot and entered by a side entrance, not realizing that we should have gone in through the main entrance to the house. Regardless, we eventually paid the admission fee and enjoyed the displays, tour of the mansion, and the history of the cork industry. The site also has a small art gallery, a cafe, and a large open courtyard and seating area.

Both a museum, a venue for concerts, art exhibitions, yoga classes - a mini-cultural center. In depth explanation of cork production. Extensive display of horsedrawn carriages and the story of the establishment of the town and area.

My wife has a keen interest in clothes which was the principal reason for our visit as there was an exhibition of fashion in the late 19th Century to about 1930.
Very well displayed if fairly small, and the information was in English as well as Portuguese which was very helpful.
The second part of the museum is given over to cork which is pretty much ubiquitous in the Algarve.
It's only a small museum but it was a very nice way to spend a leisurely hour or so and it was only a few Euro for entry.

We have regularly attend this fabulous Jazz Club over the last 10 years but last night the performance was absolutely great. 16/04/2017

This is a review of the Amegios of the Museu.
Membership of the Sao Bras Museu do Traje is essential for the enjoyment of this area.
The list of activities is too broad to mention here and over 1800 people from all walks of life belong here. Whatever your activity you will likely find a group of friendly like-minded people to share and enjoy your interest. Ours are Photograph, Portuguese language, Jazz night, Classical concert, Fado and lectures on myriad subjects. Try it, you will like it!
The Museu staff is very helpful, and will respond at admin@amigos-museu-sbras.pt

Although this is a Costume Museum site, we went for the Cork Tour which was excellent. The location is a combined costume and cork museum. A video of the cork process is shown, old equipment is displayed and explained, and old carts and wagons used in the cork and olive oil business are displayed. After the museum you are taken into the field to see cork trees and the harvesting explained. This is followed by a visit to a cork factory where the cork from the field is processed, sorted and bundled for sale to the product companies (cork makers, insulating products, etc.). Tour guide was excellent.

A museum run by a charity containing costumes and related items (like fans). The period covered is early Victorian to 1930s. The displays are thoughtfully and skilfully done, a minimalist approach, not too much is crammed in. It makes it easy to understand the trends. It's augmented by artistic lightning and appropriate sound making the whole thing very atmospheric and allowing you to immerse yourself in each period.
Opposite the museum are some old stables, now with a collection related to the region's cork industry using traditional methods. You can touch things. There's a good video showing. It's worth going here first if you're intending to go on a tour of a cork factory. There's also a collection of stabling equipment. Outside is a large gardens with a café with seating outside in the shade. There's also a large collection of carriages. It's not crowded.
This museum and the associated outhouse collections and courtyard are well worth going out of your way to visit.

This villa belonged to a rich cork merchant and is well worth a visit.There is some lovely costumes and a example of a hand embroidered dress also worth a look was the wedding dress and the lovely embroidered stockings bride wore. There is a section on military and in courtyard a array of bygone farm waggons and other forms of transport.It was interesting to see how the rich lived years ago.

We called here on a to be fair. Not a well signed mueseum. However the very small enterence fee is very well worth it. A collection of costumes reflects the history. A lovely courtyard leads to a cafe and 5he toilets. As befit a local mueseum it is also used for local group. Welll worth a visit and not far from the airport.

The museum is very much worth a visit. Thee was an exhibition themed on time and covering changes in the locale since 2012 which added to the core of the museum. Apart from the local history there is a (slightly worn) video in cork making in that section of the museum, an art gallery, a cafe/shop with outside seating in a lovely courtyard, good parking, a range of local historic carts and the old well. The inside is cool and the outside tranquil under the trees. A great place for a quiet hour or more, probably more especially for adults and older children but enough outside space for younger children too
