Nice little town with great view on the valley below and the sea. Specially at sunset. It is impossible to really enjoy it though because a busy road is right there. I mean formula 1 race tracks noise.

We stopped for a cuppa at the restaurant opposite. We were intrigued by the delapidated state of what was once certainly a proud, vibrant town. Large family homes, shutters awry, windows gone, roof caved in. Ornate stonework, statue, overgrown garden areas with shrubs still growing healthy and in flower. We were told only one elderly resident remains. A sobering visit ...

We were planning to drive from Rovinj to Plitvice national park so asked our hotel for interesting places to stop off on the way. Plomin, an almost deserted village was suggested to us. It enjoys an elevated position with super views out to sea on one side and a natural crater on the other (albeit blotted by a disused power station) Its history dates back to Roman times when the village adopted an important strategic position above the bay. In the 15th& 16th centuries it was one of the most important Venetian fortresses along the coast. It’s walls date back to the 9th century and wandering around the village there are numerous examples of ancient symbols in buildings. It’s importance gradually waned and it was virtually abandoned after the second world war when the inlet silted up. Resettlement has started on a small scale but wandering around the mainly deserted village is fascinating. The end of the settlement offers a teriffic panorama and there is a sculptor in the village who has deposited various art installations around the ruins. Everywhere is very photogenic and at present an endemic Campanula is flowering everywhere making the village even more attractive. Great for a 20 to 30 minute break. There was a restaurant by the roadside as we arrived but this was closed when we called.
