A nice little side stroll to spend 15 minutes admiring the architecture. There is a QR code for more information. It does not look like you can enter casually, but rather during services.

It is quite something to stumble upon this church when wandering around the sleepy town of Vrboska. Actually, you don't simply stumble upon it. You espy it from the Riva, and are drawn to its unusual appearance, and so you climb up for a closer look. It is a fortified church, a relic from when the marauding Turks were the scourge of this part of the world, and Croatia as the last bastion of Christendom. No wonder they film Game of Thrones in Croatia. Well some of it at least. It is a charismatic, imposing building, and well worth a look.

Don't bother!
Insulting that there is a fee of €2 to enter this largely empty barn. Yes, it includes the rooftop, though we had no interest in ascending it in the blazing sun and heat. Considering that this is the main item (of two) in the town, we left with the impression that the town had no concept of welcoming visitors.

Vrboska has one of the more unusual churches that you’ll ever see – the church fortress of St Mary of Mercy has high walls, battlements and an impressive ravelin defending the front door. A ravelin is a triangular fortification or detached outwork, located in front of the innerworks of a fortress. Originally called a demi-lune, after the lunette, the ravelin is placed outside a castle and opposite a fortification curtain. The outer edges of the ravelin are so configured that it divides an assault force, and guns in the ravelin can fire upon the attacking troops as they approach the curtain. It also impedes besiegers from using their artillery to batter a breach in the curtain wall. The side of the ravelin facing the inner fortifications has at best a low wall, if any, so as not to shelter attacking forces if they have overwhelmed it or the defenders have abandoned it. This one is unique, having a build in water container for the defenders. Try to visit catching a violin concert at the end of the day. Unforgettable.

Stunning architecture of this 15th century church 🙏 and there’s to read that’s the most beautiful in Croatia from that era.
Unfortunally it was closed during our visit.
Opening hours is 10-12 mon-sat.

A short stroll from the centre of Vrboska. Not open when we visited but definitely worth a look at the outside. Beautiful facade and interesting history.
