It was in the Ruetli Meadow, where leaders from three cantons: Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden met and took an oath to form a union, a nation we know today. You take a boat from Brunnen to Flueelen and walk up the steep hill. Every Independence Day, August 1, festivities take place here.

It's fun to come to this spot which is claimed to be the location of the initial forming of the Swiss Confederation. The legends of William Tell can also be woven into this history. You can come by boat or a combo of mass transit and walking. There's an historic restaurant on site. A Picnic area is open to all on a first come basis. But if you come a bit late for an available fire pit, you might ask to share one with an earlier arriver. Like to hike? Try making it to Fleulen from here and then taking the boat back to Lucerne from there.

It's a pleasant spot and historically resonant though I'm not sure what non Swiss visitors or residents would get out of it. There's a nice walk down from Seelisberg although the boat is probably the best way there.

Wonderful place to visit when in central Switzerland. A trip on the Laake Lucerne is a must anyway, but stop off at the Rütli, and take a later boat after your visit. The walk up to the Rütli Meadow is fairly short. You will be rewarded with a super view of the Lake and the mountains of the Cantons Uri and Schwyz. Do not forget a stop-off at the restaurant. Local specialities, and a fine reception from the friendly host and staff.
