The National Onderduickmuseum is a treasure that provides a powerful insight into the courage of the Dutch Resistance and the Jewish people they sought to protect. You first learn about the farming background of the town’s residents. The old farmhouse is meticulously maintained. Then you turn to the Museum proper, which is an old home, with the rooms left as they were during the Resistance. You learn of the people’s courage and commitment against the Nazis. This is fascinating as they were hiding people in the attic above while the Nazis were in an office below! I would like to express my profound appreciation to the Staff and especially to Mr. H. Haytink for graciously sharing his time and expertise in explaining the history. You all enriched my visit to the Netherlands and I am very grateful. I highly recommend this outstanding Museum.

This museum is actually multiple museums. One part is a house that displays a typical dutch home during WW2, it is not crammed full, but looks quite realistic. Signs are laminated onto walls and surfaces, they are display screens built in. Upstairs the displays cover how people were hid. There is another section that portrays an early 20th century school house. A third section displays an 1890s farm, including the living quarters. And finally, a section on the horn carving industry (animal horns) that was prominent in the area before mass produced plastic came in the scene. Beautiful venue, lovely town, worth the drive out of busier cities. Dutch and German, very little English support.

Great place to hang out for a couple of hours! Go back in time and get a feeling of what WWII was like - its an experience kind of like the anne frank museum- without a two hour wait. A must - see in aalten!
