Svátý Ján Pod Skalou is a charming little village just stone throw from Prague or Beroun but sometimes crowded and hard to get parking space especially on nice weather or the national holiday. The village is small, there are just the monastery, the Church with holy cave inside is the path of hermit St.Ivan in the stone and spring where you can tap fresh water, cemetery and restaurants. And couple of trails around the Czech Karts, one ot the trail leads to Karlsejn Castle. One of the favorite trails leads up to the rock with the cross or to Open Air Museum Solvay Quarries (as circle tour back to Svatý Ján. It looks like a hard climb, but it is just moderate 1km walk up to well maintained path, with some natural steps made by tree roots – not suitable for wheelchairs or prams!! From Prague Zličin Metro station you can take a bus or from Beroun. From Beroun you walk on around 5 KM long trail named Vojta Náprstek Road. (The oldest existing marked tourist trail The Czech Tourist Club marked it shortly after its founding in 1889 and named it after its founder). You can eat in the village or I recommend to walk 1KM on the yellow trail along the Kačák stream to Hostim village to the restaurant U Krobiana – homemade meals, and tasty beers from small breweries. From Hostim you can again follow the Kačák stream to Kozel Quarry and go to Srbsko from where a train can be taken to Prague or Beroun, or walk back to Beroun and pass Alkazar Quarry with climbers.

Svatý Jan pod Skalou is very small village in Central Bohemia, at about 30 kilometres out of Prague. The dominant of thus village is a big rock and Church of St. John the Baptist just under it. There is an ancient history about hermit Ivan. You can visit his cave, it is a part of the church now. Also drink the powerful healing spring St. Ivan. It is tasty and very healthy. Lot of people in comming here with bottles for water. After the visit, walk up the rock above. It will take 25 minutes. You can meet many families with little kids to go up. But few parts are little bit difficult. At the top enjoy an amazing view to the countryside or down to village with church. Stay under the big cross, this you can see from the village, and relax, it is a fantastic place for this. You can eat in restaurant Hotel Obecná škola, only 200 metres away from the church. They have a good food and it is the only one option to eat in Svatý Jan pod Skalou. To come to this village is easy by car from Beroun. You can also walk from Beroun on the red tourist way, it is only 5 kilometres in the forrest. It is possible to come also on bicycle, but it is up and down enough. In this part of Central Bohemia, take your time to visit the castle Karlštejn, caves in Koněprusy, the town Beroun or the museum of mining in Chrustenice. Everything is maximally 10 kilometres out of Svatý Jan pod Skalou.

The site where St John is said to have performed healing miracles with water, the pool he used can be seen. Very beautiful, charming tiny village, easy parking, has access by train. A great hike available to the cross on top of the rock, 150m gain in elevation, slightly easier than it looks from the ground. Nice terrain, good path, slightly blocked by two fallen trees when I visited.

This is really hidden treasure, just about 30 kms from Prague. The best way to go there is by train (my opinion and i do not have car), then you have to walk cca 5 kms, surrounded by the beautiful landscape of Czech Karst (Cesky Kras). The village itself is really tiny, basically it was always just a church and then monastery, hidden in the forests and rocks. There is lot of great tracks and paths around the village. So try some. You can get lost and it is great! You can stay calm, it is just a few steps from "civilization". But even so it is just gorgeous. Lovely place.

This is a great place for a day trip or short piknik after work. If you feel like escape from hustle of Prague, you can get to Beroun by halfhourly train from main station, and from there, it is about one hour of decent walk.
This place has long history, with a well, named after oldest Czech hermit and adjacent monastery. Dont worry, you dont have to climb that rock, there is steep, but accessible footpath leading around. The time to conquer this 180 metres high rock takes me usually between 15-30 minutes, depending on a pace. And the pub downthere is worth to try as well. I remember, how they let us in for a cup of tea with a class of 25 children, even though they were closed.

This little village and church is in the middle of nowhere. It makes me wounder why they build it here. With that being said the place is amazing. The view from the top of the hill is impressive and worth the trip.

This is a place I visit several times per year. To climb to the hill is little bit harder but the view worths it! The top place is a peak of the rock. Watch your step, children or dog but the experience is really great. Really interesting touristic point.

If You like to see somethong other nearby Prague, visit Svatý jan pod Skalou (St.John below the Rock. The best way is from the Zličín Underground station (Yellow line) and buy ticket directly to St.John or to Loděnice and there is an touristic path through the Valley of Loděnice Creek till to St.John. Monumental place is there with old cemetery, old Monastery (now school) and older Church with holy cave inside is the path of St.Ivan in the stone. Place connected with the beiginning of Christianity in the Czech Kingdom. Wonderfull Rocks around and best view is from the Rock (about 25 min. to the top). amasing visit of the valley will be have good and in the pub by Krobian at Hostim Village (about 1,5 km downstream the creek). Dont miss this sacred and mystical place. Place is an part of Geopark J.Barrande and nearby top of the Rock You can during the weekends visit Open Air Museum of Limestone mining - Solvay Quarries or Barbora. Interresting old technical equipment is there.

Svatý Jan pod Skalou (St. John under the Cliff), a delightful village deep in the forest nearby famous Karlštejn Castle, is a true hidden gem of the Central Bohemian region. Its history dates back to the 9th century when, according to legend, the first Czech Christian hermit, Ivan, settled down in a cave under a large cliff and it's known for the run-down St John Benedictine Monastery and the attached baroque Church of St John the Baptist, which has a spectacular cross once located on Charles Bridge in Prague. Definitely worth a visit!

This was the first hike I undertook in the Czech Republic and it was a great intro into hiking in the beautiful landscape of Bohemia. The caves under the church made for a great find. The hike up the mountain is definitely taxing for those who don't hike very often. Bring plenty of water and snacks to keep you energized as there will not be any means to get refreshments along the trail. The only bathrooms and refreshments will be down in the town. Great place to go, highly recommended.
