Getting a feel of local life

From this pier we bought boat tickets to Don Det for 15,000 LAK per person. Very simple place with convenience stores, restaurants, hotels and bike rental shops nearby. I took some photos while waiting for the boat. If you buy bus ticket Don Det to Cambodia, check with them if that includes boat rides so you don't have to pay extra for the boat.

A nice little place, quiet enough.

Taking a boat to Don Det or Don Khone
Mar 2018 • Friends
Nothing much for the town. This is the place to catch a boat to the islands in the middle of Mekhong. It take only 5-10 minutes to get there. If you book a bus from tour agency in Pakse, the boat is included. If you come to the pier by yourself, you might have to wait until get at least 4 people for the boat to leave.

Use the road, it's faster

The only reason I didn’t give a 1 is that it may give you a flavor of adventure crossing the Mekong on this old boat. We crossed with a car and it took us about 2 hours before we were on the other side. We came from Champassak and the captain was on the other side. Despite my wife speaks fluent Lao and Thai, it was impossible to contact anybody. Laziness is the rule there according to locals and I will not say the contrary. When the boat finally came, they charged us 150,000 kips (17€) for the car and the passengers and they tried to cheat us for 200,000, but it didn’t work… Service stops at 5 pm and we realized it is faster to drive to Pakse and come to Champassak on the road. If you are a pedestrian or if you ride a motorbike, the situation could be better as you can go on smaller rafts to join the other side of the river.
