When strolling through Aegina town a visit to the very centrally located Fish Market should be included in a tour. It can be found between the busy harbour road Leoforos Dimokratias and the pedestrian only Panyotis Iriotis street. It is not a big market, but quite good for a Greek island, since fishing is still an important economy here, supplying also Athens with fish. In the years before and after 1900 Aegina had been one of the Greek centers for sponge diving. Now, besides tourism the most important activity is the cultivation of pistachios, in Greek called 'Aegina nuts'. But fishing is still around as can not only be see at the fish market, but also at the many taverns with a usually good selection of fresh fish. One of the most typical is the 'Psarotaverna' (Fish Tavern) just at the back of the Fish Market: 'I Agora' or popularly known by the name of the owners:'Geladakis'.
