About
Stilt fishing is a method of fishing unique to the island country of Sri Lanka, known as “the Pearl of the Indian Ocean”. The fishermen sit on a cross bar called a ‘petta’ tied to a vertical pole and driven into the sand a few meters offshore. From this high position, the fishermen casts his line, and waits until a fish comes along to be caught. Although the approach looks primitive and ancient,

Not me! Yes I know stilt fishermen don't exist anymore and the guys down at the beach here are effectively just (bad) actors who will pose on the stilts for you and pretend they are fishermen, while looking extremely bored. But....I was happy to pay my 1000 SLR and get on the stilts with them for that truly iconic photo. I got the beach to myself just before a packed tourist bus arrived so got lucky. Call me naive but I knew what I was paying for and I for one are very happy with the picture I now have on my wall. Nothing says Sri Lanka more than a sunset view of the stilt fishermen. If you don't agree, don't go!

Unfortunately, I didn't realize that fishermen do not fish on stilts anymore. Instead, you pay fishermen to go on stilts to take photographs. It is still interesting to see, but very touristy and not authentic. For those not into photography, it's likely not worth a visit. Unfortunately, there was also no sunrise or sunset when I was there so I did not get the photos I was hoping for that you see on Google when you search for stilt fishermen. Makes you wonder how old those photos are!

Great to experience the unique tradition of stilt fishing at Stilt Fishermen View Point, Kogalla.

It's a cultural spectacle that's both fun and fascinating, offering an insight into Sri Lanka's local way of life.

The fishermen were great with our 13 year old and nine year old, letting them 'fish' with them.

We felt this was a must-see during our trip and were really happy to pay 1000LKR to each fisherman, and feel this helps support them a little.

I had to pay a small fee to some fishermen to take some pics, and It's fair enough, because you help them somehow. It's a unique experience, which you will understand how the poor local people use to fish and bring some money to their families.

The place is before getting to koggale bus station, 10 min-15 min walking.

I read the reviews, and I went anyway. A lot of people asked if I wanted a photo. I said no, and kept walking. Around sunset I walked back to the fishing area, and all the fishermen were out on the stilts. Someone may have paid, and I was able to enjoy the show. It was very pretty.

On a separate note, I think the beaches there are nice and worth a swim. The waves weren't rough.

Stilt fishing is an old traditional fishing around sri langka. They sit on think planks hoping to catch the fishes. The rough waves keeps the big fishes away.

Money Money Money.
This please is horrible, we want to take pictures of the fisherman's.
But an aggressive local forbid us to take pictures and even follow us until the street.
It's all about the money!
Tourists are CASH COWS.

Stopped by as we heard so much about the fishermen on stilts. When we got there we quickly realized that this is a MAJOR TOURIST TRAP! They're only there for the pictures and will charge 1,000 rupees per person for 3 fishermen to go on stilts and another 500 for us to go on it. Really beautiful beach though and gorgeous water. Just not the real thing!

We arrived to see the stilt fishermen, it was a lovely spot, spoke to a guy about taking photos there were 3 men, we agreed a price of 1500 rupees about £7 which I was happy to pay, because this was one of the things I wanted to see whilst in Sri Lanka, we were the only ones there and took lots of photos I had my photo taken with all of them when they got down from the stilts, one of the men gave us a bowl to wash our feet and a towel to dry them afterwards, they were polite not aggressive and friendly, if your not happy to pay don’t go simple, my photos are great and so pleased we went.
