Although the lake is beautiful to see, the less than two hour boat trip is extremely expensive and not worth the price asked for. The guy at the reception is absolutely bandit that should be denounced to the government. He makes up prices according to his liking. A scam is also the price asked for the so called “medicines.”
I will try to inform the relevant authorities to stop this. The only interesting thing was the fish spa for 500 LKR per person.

Our tuktuk driver brought us to this lake. At the boat company we saw nice pictures of the wildlife: various bird species, crocodiles, monkeys, varanes, ... Also a trip to cinnamon island and fish foot eating/massage was on the list.
What we got was 1 monkey in a tree right after departure, no other wildlife, a long and slow ride in the lake with nothing to see. And when the wind was behind us we also could smell the fumes from the engine. The cinamon island experience was just about sniffing at some crushed leaves and being invited for the tea at the home of some people living there, the fish foot massage was not included in the price.
Apparently it was a chance in a hundred you will see a crocodile here as there are only 3 or 4. And for special birds you might have had a chance if you would come very early in the morning.
So we felt cheated: our expectations were not managed at all, the boat guide was just reacting positively on our enthousiasm. If we would have been informed that we didn´t have a serious chance of seeing wildlife and what the cinnamon island experience was about, we would not have taken this boat trip. And possibly have given a 3 or 4 dot reaction because of their honesty. In stead we like to give this the lowest score as an advice to others.

Totally disagree with all negative reviews. Arrived by tuk tuk and negotiated a cheap price for the boat. Within a few minutes we saw loads of black monkeys, we saw two crocodiles, two huge water lizards, loads of birds. On the way back our guide spotted monkeys, he slowly got the boat to the trees and we were so fortunate to be able to feed them bananas which they took from our hands. The mother was watching which was a bit scary but all part of the experience. Cinnamon Island was really interesting, the man has lived there all of his life making small amounts of money from cinnamon. No pressure at all to buy anything. The fish spa was brilliant and such a great experience. Yes we were fortunate to see what we did but I would not be put off by negative reviews. For info we got the boat around 11am and we saw loads.

Very poor value. Overpriced and had a lousy guide. He was very well meaning but did not know much about what was going on. The boat kept stalling and we fell well short of the allotted time. Certainly not something we would repeat and ended up being the most disappointing activity on our holiday.

We went to visit the turtle hatchery & the handunugoda tea estate some. On the way our tuk tuk driver kept insisting he will take us to a herbal/spice garden were we can buy herbal products. We declined saying we were in a hurry. After many attempts he eventually told us he will take us to Kogalla lake just to view the scenery as it is on the way. After his insisting we agreed.
We didnt realise the herbal garden scam is next to koggala lake. The guy from the herbal garden rushed over & took us for a tour of some plants with products next to them & told us what health benefits the plant offers. A boy came running over with tea, no milk or sugar, just with some cinnamon bark in it that they called it spice tea & u have to drink it. At the end of it they insist on giving u a massage saying it is cheaper than the hotel spa prices & they are having a special price promo just for that day. We managed to refuse the massage. They then take u to this little shop with so called herbal creams & oils that are extremely highly priced & insist u buy something & they will make a special price. We bought the cheapest thing just to get out of there, a bottle of vanilla extract for 1000 rupees. Came home to discover the vanilla was fake.
They really try to sell you their fake hair removal cream made from onions which is just normal hair removal cream mixed with stuff. They even did a demonstration on my husbands leg to remove the hair. When we exited our tuk tuk driver went into the shop & walked out with his commission hidden behind a postcard, which he kept in his tuk tuk.
Our driver also insisted on stopping along the way for us to see the stick fishermen. When we stopped, a fisherman came over to us & said no photos allowed unless we pay him 1000 rupees per each photo that we take with our cameras. Our driver had a rastafarian themed tuk tuk & charged us an excessive amount to drive us around, his name was Kosala & he is a Sri Lankan man with rastafarian dreadlocks on his hair.

Avoid this. It’s a waste of time and money. The boat drivers wanted 4000 rupees to take me around the lake. I said I’d wait to see if others came along to split the cost. They got aggressive and told me they didn’t want me trying to join in with other groups. No one else came by in a short amount of time. They settled on 2500 rupees to take me to cinnamon island where I was pressured to buy overpriced cinnamon.
Rude dishonest people. Worthless tourist trap. Don’t waste your money here.

This place is a huge rip off. From the moment we arrived they wanted to charge us 3000 each for the boat ride. When we refused the price dropped to 2000, and then when we still refused he was willing to negotiate. There are better places for you to spend your money.

Our tuk tuk driver took us here as we were keen to learn a bit more about cinnamon farming. The lake trip was expensive (3000 rupees each) and was promised to be 1 hour (ended up taking 2 hours) and then at each island they wanted to charge us more. We were taken to 'fish feeling' which is where you put your feet in amongst small feeding fish. It was only after finishing the guy wanted another 1200 rupees each. We had been lead to believe all the 'experiences' on the tour was inclusive. They weren't happy and then on the cinnamon island we weren't made very welcome and made to wait about 30 minutes for a boat. We missed out on the temple island as we needed to get back. So overall, the lake is beautiful but these guys need to learn that deception is not a long-term business model for a tourist operator. It is a nice lake, if you want to see it...negotiate hard on the boat price as nothing else is included. The products they sell in the herb farm are also overpriced.

We sadly can't say anything good about this place. The boat we were on had huge problems with diesel fumes. After a few minutes on the boat we were taken to the Buddhist temple - extra fee, then to where they produce cinnamon - extra fee, then to the fish farm - extra fee. The wildlife amounted to one monkey and two eagles and a cormorant. We got off the boat as soon as we could.

We took a boat tour of the lake, costing SLR5,000 total - the boat was in good condition with a sunroof, and picked us up from our villa. We were able to dictate where we wanted to go, and therefore specifically asked not to go to the spice garden due to the ripping off we'd heard about. A quick zip around the lake lasting around an hour wasn't really worth the price (limited wildlife but I suppose we were spoiled at our villa with it on our doorstep), however we all enjoyed the one stopoff we made at the cinnamon farm, which was interesting and bought some of their cinnamon curry powder for SLR600. You really should buy something after the demonstration, but we were happy to do so.
