About
Innerdalen has frequently been called Norway's most beautiful mountain valley. Drive the RV 70 road between Sunndalsora and Tingvoll, turn off at Alvundeid and head in to Nerdal. Park your car and enjoy the hour it takes you to stroll the four kilometres in to the heart of the Innerdalen valley. The valley resembles a cathedral, dominated by the 1,452 metre mountain Innerdalstarnet (Means; The tower of Innerdalen walley), which towers over the valley like a natural spire. A crystal clear lake sparkles on the valley floor and streams and small rivers cascade down from the glaciers above. A network of marked paths takes you out of the valley and into the mountains, where Renndolsetra summer pasture farm lies ready to welcome you with traditional fare and farm animals. Further into the mountains, you come to the Innerdalshyttene cabins, one old and one new cabin, which are run by the Norwegian Mountain Hiking Association and which have long been used as a stopping place, and a place to eat and stay overnight by travellers in the mountains.

You can either go to Innerdalen via Bjøråskaret in Todalen, or you can drive there and then follow a country road to the valley. Driving there and then walking is a nice trip, and suits young and old well. If you want to have a mountain trip with the buyer, I encourage you to go via Bjøråskaret. That trip is not suitable for small children. In Innerdalen you can get good food, board and lodging at Renndølssætra!

Having relatives in Aalvundeid, the nearest village, we visit Innerdalen valley every summer. A hiking trip from Nerdalen and back is a must, and this is manageable for all ages, even the small ones (in strollers). The trip is aproximately 3.5 km each way, on gravelled road.
My best advice is to have a rest at Renndolsetra, the small dairy farm, which sells delicious waffles with blackberry jam. While there, the kids always like to look at the cows and pigs. A bath in the river is also refreshing!
Words do not do this place justice, have a look at the pictures instead.

Easy access, broad uphill pathway to one of the greatest valleys with two lodges. Can easily recommend the walk up from the carpark. This would have been 5 stars if the rest of the area was equally friendly for hiking, but the climbs out of the valley are quite steep and if you follow the valley floor path it is nothing more than some randomly placed poles and collapsed woodwork in a boggy, soggy wetland. A bit more challenging than I expected.

Words cannot describe how beautiful and picturesque this valley is. Well worth a hike and either a coffee and cinnamon bun at the mountain lodge. Or a hike on one of the many trails? People are very friendly here. Make sure you take a camera. Get there early to park in the free car park, so you don't have to pay 50k to park in the framers yard.

Thank you so much!
The car park is far too small, but is about to be extended. We are very thankful that the farmer offer his yard to help out. :)

I've visited Innerdalen park with my boyfriend during a round trip of Southern Norway.
We found a day with a loooot of wind and we were freezing so go well equipped with a good jacked, scarf, cap and trekking shoes!
The park is very easy to find: just follow the indication on route 70 and, after 10/15 minute of a narrow road through a pine forest, you'll find the parking (free) where you can find also a toilet (attention! is the only one before the park's hytta, 4km further).
The little dirt path, 4 km long, will take you inside the nature until a wonderful lake where you can find some hytter (during peak season maybe some of them are for rent or restaurants but actually I don't know it because we were there when the season were already off).
Wonderful landscape, trail not so difficult, recommended to anyone who needs a break of peace into the nature, an enchanted place.

We stayed at Rødset Gård - where you can rent a restored small house "Slettastuo" with dishwasher, washing machine and a nice bathroom. Kitchen has all you need as well. There is a 15 minute drive from the house up to Innerdal car-park. From here it is a good hour walk up to Renndølsetra where the hike can start.
The first bit can be a bit wet, but the last part of the trip is on rocks. there are several places to fill your water bottle on the way up.
The trip is strenuous but worth it. If this is your first hiking trip: You should think twice before starting. There is a lot of air beneath you on the last climb towards the top.

A beautiful spot, the trip from the parking to the cabin is easy and a nice hike for the whole family to have some food and drinks there. But the trip up to the mountain peak is a long and strenuous hike, and a bit of climbing in the end, but all worth it for the fantastic view that awaits you on the top!

Renndølssetra is the perfect place to stay when visiting Trollheimen. The owners of the place are the nicest people imaginable. The food is great, both the breakfast and 3 course dinner. The beds are comfortable and the view all around the seter is just super scenic and nice. It is also a great starting point for the many somewhat challenging hikes in the area.
I give Renndalssetra 6 out of 5 stars.

When we visited Innerdalen last year we saw name plaques on trees and rocks, DIKJESTEINEN, FONNABEKKJEN, JOMYRA, BERGJESKROO, AKSLA, ORMHAUGEN. There may have been others we missed. Can you tell us what they refer to please?
Written January 15, 2017
Hi Joan!
That is a very good question! I have never thought of the problem that foreign-speaking people do not understand what it is! Sorry about that!
The plaques is simply local names on places. For instance Dikjesteinen is the name on that specific rock! And it means the rock surrounded by mud..
Fonnabekkjen is the name on the small stream crossing the road, were "Fonn" means snow-avalanche, and the last part: "-bekk" or "bekkjen" means small stream.
Jomyra is the name on a small bog by the road.
Bergjeskrøo is the name on a part of the road, where you could see it was very steep. It's two words put together, were the first part "Bergje" means rock, or steep rock, or even mountain. (To make it worse, we have written it in dialect..) The last part, "skrøo" is a lokal name for rock-slide..
"Aksla" means shoulder, and it refers to how the road flattens out after the steep part. It is a (old, not so much used any more) word for places in nature with bends, like a shoulder.
The last sign; "Ormhaugen" is also a local name for that small part of the road, meaning "Snake hill".. :)
The plaques are meant to inform visitors on local names, since they tend to be forgotten when they are not used.
I hope this explained your question. :)
Regards, Eystein Opdøl.

I am thinking of visiting Innerdalen from Trondheim, and it seems either route 65, or E6 and 70 takes about the same amount of time, is there one more beautiful to drive on than the other?
Written May 5, 2015
Hi Kevin!
So glad you are thinking of visiting Innerdalen!
Both ways takes about the same time, as you say, maybe a bit shorter on route 65, but there you have to take a short(10 min) trip with a ferry, wich has departure every half hour.
My tip is that you drive E6 and 70 to us, and route 65 back! (Or the other way of course!)
Driving the route 70 from Oppdal to Sunndalsøra is offering a stunning view as you drive down the Sunndal valley with its beautiful farms, and the steep valley straight up to 1800 meters above sea level! And the waterfalls cascading down the same mountain hills.. :)
A well kept secret in Sunndal valley is that we have the 6th AND 7th tallest waterfall of the world just by the road, the Vinnufallet/Vinnufossen is 865m total height, and Skorga is 864 m. So if you like that kind of scenery, you should make a stop.
Also, just before you turn off the main road to Innerdalen, coming from Oppdal, it might be worth to turn left to "Oppdøl" just after the tunnel, and take an extra 10 minutes down the old road to the fjord. I am not very objective, since I live there, but when the road served as main road, loads and loads of tourist stopped to take pictures of the scenery with the steep mountains and the fjord! :)
Hope this was sort of helpful!
I guess you know that the lodges do not open until mid-june?
Regards,
Eystein Opdøl
