It’s not for the unfit but it’s a very beautiful church in a beautiful town. Recommend if you ever come to the Sporades. Lovely church and amazing history!

Instead of looking at the monument I ended up trying to save a cat dying of dehydration and disease. The poor thing was on its last legs and I gave it some water. They have a serous cat problem in Greece and do not care for them. Please research STRAY CARE SKOPELOS on Facebook , it is a local vet on the island who helps the animals. She does not have good english but if you are planning a trip to the island from the mainland bring some cat food or buy up the cat food in the local shops and drop it off to her, she has so many animals she is helping.

Panagitsa of Pyrgos is well known church at Skopelos town.It is also known as Our Lady Tower. Did you know that the puropse of this church at the pirate's time (18 th and 19 th century) was the watch tower. From the very narrow windows people watched if the pirates approached to Skopelos bay and if they were near, on the first ringing the bell people had to leave their houses. On the second ringing the bell the rest of people had to boil the oil and that boiled oil had to effuse on the stone streets and stairs! On that way pirates were disabled to enter to city and rob the houses and churches. Because of that there are more than 40 churches at Skopelos town! Locals said that when is raining it is still slippery on the stone stairs, because of that boiled oil which was effused by two centuries!

Little Orthodox church at the end of the Skopelos marina. Climb up the stairs, visit the white temple and then do the magnificent set of photos. If you choose to come here on a sunny day, don't forget the sunglasses - the whiteness will blind you : been here few times, know why I'm telling you. Great panoramic view.

I was on a boat tour from Skiathos to Skopolos Town and Alonnisos. Unfortunately it rained throughout my 2 hrs in Skopolos Town, nevertheless we had a guided tour to the Panagitsa and through many lanes and we passed many other churches. Disapointingly none of the churches were open. The climb to the Panagista from the end of the harbour involved well over 100 steps, but the views made the climb worthwhile.
