About
The Raka brand was named after Piet Dreyer's black fishing vessel. Piet's first love has always been the sea. For some 36 years he braved the storms and challenges of the coast, ever in search of the best catch. It is with this same passion that the Dreyer family now pursue the art of wine making. With the rich blessing of earth and elements, the help of a dedicated workforce, the enthusiasm of winemaker Josef Dreyer and the advantages of a modern gravity flow cellar, Piet Dreyer produces his award-winning Raka wines.

Person that host the wine tasting can be more friendly and helpful. We did not feel welcome and it felt as if we were done a favour by offering us a wine tasting. All the information about the wines, I got from Platter’s wine guide and not from the hostess. Limited information was given about available snacks.

Visiting Raka has been on my bucket list for a while-we drink their reds frequently and love the Overberg area. We travelled a fair mile to get there , and were sadly disappointed The tasting room is freezing cold, dark and unwelcoming , lacks a roaring fire to welcome those who arrive in winter. Rather uninspiring hospitality from the hostess, who told us precious little about our tasting , seemed to be just doing her job but lacked the spark and details. The unimaginative experience needs a makeover , here is a challenge to the owners. They have clearly worked miracles with the soil and the wine, now make the magic happen.

Actually really disappointing, the reception area is chilly , dark and unwelcoming. Nobody seems to really care if you are there or not. Hostess was rather limited in her wine knowledge and appeared to just want to " get the job done"

Tasting room disappointing, in need of attention on outside and no fireplace, or heating in side, freezing cold. Cannot believe it is Raka!

My wife and I were on an extended visit to South Africa. Starting with a safari in Kruger Park (see Hamilton's Tented Safari review) and then traveling on the Rovos Train (see Rovos Train review) from Pretoria to Cape Town. On board the train we enjoyed a great sampling of wines from the the region and fell in love with the Raka Winery. Thinking we wouldn't be able to get this wine in the states we enjoyed what we could while on the train. Jump to 1 week later...we were staying in Cape Town (see Camps Bay Atlantic View Hotel review) and decided to rent a car for a few days and explore. Taking a day long drive to Cape Agulhas we were surprised to see a sign for Raka Winery. Stumbling on it totally by chance we went in for a nice visit and bought what we could to use during the rest of our stay in South Africa and then took 4 bottles home. Highly recommend all their wines!

Friendly, knowledgeable staff, very helpful and informative. Left buying a few more bottles than we are able to carry onboard our flight, so a couple were drunk before ! "Bliss"

The Stanford wine route is not as well known as the Stellenbosch region, but the wines are superb. Raka has a beautiful tasting room and in particular their red wines are something special.
