The Church associated with the Pilgrimage of Grace
Jul 2017 • Friends
All Saints Church, Aughton

Drive through Aughton Village to the end of Pasture Lane, and park up by Aughton Hall. Then walk a short distance on the footpath through a field (well signposted); as you turn left you will see this charming church, but before you reach it, look at the earthworks on the right hand side which are all that remains of an 11th century Motte-and-Bailey.

All Saints looks out over flat fields towards the River Derwent. It's not unknown for the fields to flood and make the Church appear to be isolated. Outside, look for the carved newt or salamander which in Old English was known as an Ask. The reason for the image is that this Church is always identified with Sir Richard Aske, one of the leaders of the Pilgrimage of Grace, and who was tried for treason by King Henry VIII in the 16th century.

Inside, the Church is elegant and full of interesting carvings and masonry, particularly the Chancel Arch and the Font, plus some fine stained glass windows. Make sure you take your camera!!
