Once on the lake "Lago Smeraldo" find the path to the gorge and the waterfalls, by a fair day ideal for a picnic down there where nature is KIng !
It is free.....unthinkable! while we had to pay elsewhere (Ex. Vintgar Slovenia) for a less attractive place.
If you are in the region don't miss it; also many cheese factories around that area.

the lake was mostly covered in snow and ice when we were there. but we walked along the sunny side of the lake where the snow had melted and did walk the shady side until the snow got too deep. there is a very nice cafe by the lake ,where we drank tea and ate ice creams sitting outside in the sunshine.

After a lovely walk through the canyon you climb the steps to discover this lovely lake to walk round and finish up at the pizzeria to enjoy a drink and a pizza

This was a beautiful place in the snow this February and well worth the walk from our hotel in Fondo. The adjoining rocky gorge with its frozen waterfalls and old mill building was a delight to visit.

We have only ever seen the lake frozen and to be honest that's good enough for me!
From the time you climb the steps from canyon rio sas, past the waterfall, you just have to say WOW when you see the lake.
Last time we were here in February 13 there was about a foot of snow all round the lake and words couldn't describe the beauty of such a sight, this time however, the snow had all but melted but the view was still spectacular.
The lake is quite large, but you can walk around it in about an hour if you stroll. One side has a road and proper pathway, but the other sides are woodland walks.
The lake was still well frozen and had been used for ice skating and hockey during the winter which was nice to see the locals use it.
Walking is easy around the lake with good paths and a flat ground to walk on. There are plenty of benches for you to sit and simply enjoy the views but there are also restaurants at both ends if you want refreshments.
There is a road access to the lake from fondo if you don't fancy walking through the canyon but for us the two go together

We had an hour and a half to arrive at the lake with our car but it was definitely worth it. Since we visited in winter we knew that the lake would be frozen and in fact that was our main reason for our visit since we wanted to ice skate. It's very wide and spacious for ice skating and also very good for beginners since one could easily move freely around it. We had to pay so we could skate and also since we rented the ice skates. There is a cafe next to it which one could easily stop for a coffee.

With clear water and possibility of fishing. There is a strange big boat, running through the lake. Couldn't find the reason. Probably some local folclore. Anyway worth a visit.
