Massaciuccoli Lake, as often happens in the coastal plains, represents with its fresh and shallow waters an intermediate stage of evolution between that of the lagoon (i.e. a body of water in contact with the sea, and therefore of salted waters) and that of dry plain resulting from the filling of the water body by sediments.
Human activities can then interfere in this natural process, accelerating the filling (typically, in past centuries, through reclamation) or vice versa, countering it (as in past decades it happened in Massaciuccoli by taking peat or sand from the basin).
Today the lake surface is quite stable, if measured on human times, and has been included since 1979 in the “Migliarino San Rossore Massaciuccoli Regional Park”. In connection with this regional initiative, the LIPU (Italian League for the Protection of Birds) obtained a large area of the lake in concession in 1985 to constitute an ornithological oasis; which is the one we also visited, on a sunny but unusually cold day in February, as it was swept by the "buran" wind of Siberian origin.
We took advantage of both the circular pedestrian path (free) through the lake reeds, which starts and ends at the Oasis visitor center, and the navigation provided - in these Covid times - for small family groups on electric boats (one hour navigation, 15 euros per person). Both experiences were interesting, even if the navigation was plagued by the freezing wind, which rages most when moving away from the sheltered hills and proceeding towards the center of the lake.
We have seen some interesting birds (white herons, egrets, fish hawks ...), although not as many as can be seen from the end of March onwards. Even the birds present then, to shelter from the wind, remained hidden in the reeds and therefore were more difficult to see.
Despite this, ours was a pleasant experience, which positively affected a winter Saturday.

Living "next door", I visit the lake on a weekly basis. The WWF oasis has done really a great job on the boardwalks allowing you to walk just up to the edge of the lake and hidden in observer huts you can watch the wildlife . Over the years the boardwalks have been increased to various routes now, Go early in the morning to have the sun in your back and to listen to the birds singing in the reeds, the walk will put you in a good mood for the rest pf the day !
there is parking just in front of the entrance, the access is free , pay also a visit to the little wildlife musuem, kids will love it.

I've visited a few times and every time I go, it's always fun and never boring. I definitely recommend visiting if you want a fun and inexpensive little adventure outing. You don't always see the wildlife that calls the oasis home, but the walk through it is enough to make it worth while.

About three quarters of a mile of nature walks on boardwalks through the marshes surrounding Lake Massaciuccoli. Several hides for observing bird life. There is a short section through a wood and a little miniature ferry at one point to pull yourself across an inlet! Lots of dragonflies and quite a few birds. I recognised a cormorant and a heron which is just about my limit. A few parking spaces at the start of the wok and another car park about a hundred yards away on the road leading to the nature walks. You can also walk along the Puccini cycle track that leads around the lake and runs between Lucca and Torre del Lago. There are lots of maps and information boards. All in Italian so take your dictionary!

We took our 4 and 2 year old here and to the roman ruins next door. They loved watching the fish and birds and the opportunity to have a run around. We walked through the little museum (two rooms in a house) and the guide was helpful. The boardwalks rails are big enough for a child to crawl under but f you are careful they will be fine. It was free which was even better.

Such a beautiful place to spend a few days We were on a campsite and took a bike ride ( 10 minutes) to the beach Pity about all the dirty handkerchiefs (and other left obviously from the nighttime dwellers) and the rubbish left by uncivil people. Dog friendly and all welcome on the free beach. Take with you all you need as the bars quite a way away

Very nice oasi to visit if you want to see some wildlife, The wodden walking path is well mantained, the only low point is that the hide to see bird are against the sun in the evening/sunset so is not so good to go for wildlife photo in the afternoon.

Visited the museum and bird hides reached via boardwalk across the marsh Saw many common and rarer species.
For a longer visit take the signposted cycle path which starts beyond the hotel and which follows the edge of the Lago towards the Puccini Villa.

È possibile noleggiare canoa senza avere la guida? In che orari è possibile il noleggio? Grazie!

Hi! I'm looking for somewhere quiet to stop and have a nighttime picnic on the road from le Cinque Terre to Florence. Can anyone tell me if one can walk around the lake after dark?
