Stunning are of pure awesomeness

The greater Stelvio National Park is the most amazing area for mountain bikers, and hikers to go into the back country. You'll find quiet meadows only "disturbed" by the ringing bells of the cows, and big bald mountains reaching into the sky.

Beautiful national park with a plenty of possibilities

We spent a week in the Stelvio Park and it was amazing. We stayed at the Camp Trafoi. From the camp, we went to the Passo Stelvio (easy hike) or Rifugio Payer (moderate hike). We went by car to the nearby Solda (15 min), where is quite many possibilities to go (we took the lift and went to the Dusseldorfer hutte, where is 4-5 peaks (of different difficulty) to be summited. If you are into cars, go to the Passo Stelvio and enjoy 45 turns and cca 1400 m elevation. However, we did not like it; too many cars, motorcycles, bikes etc. At the top, go to Rifugio Garibaldi, a small fortress-like refuge/hotel with a warm atmosphere. We then continued down to Santa Catarina Valfurva and then to Cima Solda.
The great advantage of the Stelvio national park is that you can do easy-difficult hikes; if you are experienced enough, then easy alpinism and glacier walks (normal routes to ortler, Monte Zebru, Monte Cevedale, etc.). If you are an "expert", try Gran Zebru, Ortler traverse, north-west ridge of Cima Vertana. And moreover, we did not meet a lot of tourists.

Beautiful area to get out and explore, walk or ride a bike. We rode along the river and truly enjoyed the day.

A group of us went up the Stelvio on our bike. The scenery was amazing. However, SO many DISRESPECTFUL bikes went up there, making it unenjoyable. They make a lot of noise, which cannot be good for the biodiversity, and some of the bikers came so close to us it was dangerous. There were also luxury cars out there doing the same. Some bikers even moved their leg as if to show us that they wanted us off. However, we are the ecological group, not making noise nor pollution. It was very disappointing.

We drove Stelvio from north to south, and it is a beast (49 turns) of a climb with a big BMW. Nice scenery and nice atmosphere on the top.

I love this place. Specially with a road bicycle.
You can ride in many diffrent directions. Thera are a few places where you can stop for food and drink. Don't go to early in the summer, they don't open to the summit until the beginning of June.

We walked around the Ortler Mountain Group. Some days we walked without seeing anyone in July 2012. Other days we met good numbers in the honey pots of Peio Fonti and Monte Vioz and in Sudental valley both still not to be missed. Saw marmot, red deer and chamois and loads of different butterflies. All valleys good but Val di Zebru good for wildlife in evenings.Sudental and Martelltal would make good bases for exploring the surrounding valleys and peaks, chairlifts available. This park is relatively unknown to UK visitors but is as good as any other part of the alps. Much glaciated too with mountain refuges throughout the area many brillianltly positioned overlooking glaciers. dislikes none. Weather pretty good 3 bad days in 21 days.
