Based on other reviews, I wasn't sure if this should or should not be a priority during our self-driving tour of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. I'm glad we made the stop/climb. If you are expecting a dramatic view into a volcano crater, you will be disappointed. If you view this as an opportunity to get a view from a high perch of the surrounding area, you'll enjoy it. The volcanic rock at the top of the climb is also interested to look at. It looks like a lot of stairs but it does not take more than 5 or so minutes to ascend.

Interesting geological visit to the Saxholl Crater. You can walk to the top of the crater via excellent man-made steps. Great views once you reach the top and very windy.

Fairly smooth road in off the main highway to the crater. The walk up and lookout was pretty easy. I’d budget 30 minutes roughly for this stop.

Situated all by itself, the crater rises from the surrounding plain. Small car park beside it then the steps to the summit. I didn't count them but there must have been at least 400. The view from the top is amazing as the surrounding area was covered in snow. Dress well as the strong wind made it very cold. There is a plaque on the summit showing other landmarks in the area. Take photos on the way down - it is much easier.

We climbed Saxholl crater because we were in the area and had a bit of extra time. Of the craters I have climbed in Iceland (Grabrock, Eldborg, Viti, Hverfjall) it is my least favorite.. this crater has been adapted for people on bus tours. There are close to 500 metal grated steps circling the crater up to the top, and the width of the steps is too wide to take them two at a time, and the rise is way too short to be comfortable.. so you take these itty bitty uncomfortable steps up and feel silly doing so. I’d rather a slope of scree than these steps.

But that said, it’s a nice little crater, and gives you the opportunity to see an actual crater, inside and out, without having to exert a lot of effort or time. The inner cone is nicely multi colored, and the views from the side and top.. well.. they really can’t be beat. On one side you see the lava field as it stretches to the ocean. There is also the remnant of a smaller crater on the ocean side. On the other side you see an ancient glacier covered volcano (Snaefellsjokull glacier) in all its majesty.

The parking lot is literally at the base of the crater, so you can drive right up to it and climb to the top on solid stable surfaces. People with mobility issues could handle this climb. It does not require hiking boots, but I would recommend at least sturdy shoes with a grippy sole. The top of the crater is a little more rustic and natural, but you don’t have to climb over the rocks to get the views. This can be done in as little as a half hour, if you are really pressed for time.

The climb to the top of Saxholl Crater is a short 5-10 minutes (depending on your fitness) to the top. Up a series of winding metal stairs, the view from the top on a clear day is incredible. On a windy day, be careful as there is no rail and the wind can be rough. Try to climb on a clear day.

The sun was out! Thank goodness! This was right off the main park road so we stopped. The stairs to the top made this easily accessible, if you can do a lot of steps.

We were almost blown off the top of the crater - we had encountered fierce wind in Iceland but this was incredible. If it were raining there is no way we would have done this. Otherwise the wind made it entertaining in its own way but we did not linger at the top.

An interesting crater though I like Kerid near the Golden Circle better. Worth a quick tour.

An easy climb and a beautiful view. I would only do this if you are driving by and want to stop for something to look at - it's interesting to do on route but I wouldn't drive out of my way for it

This is a nice, easy climb up a crater because of the metal stairs all the way up. At the top there's a good view of the landscape below. If the weather is clear, you can see the top of the volcano. Unfortunately it was cloudy when we were there but still worth the stop!

I recommend stopping by if you are in the area. 396 stairs will take you to the top of the crater.
The crater rises 109 m above sea level. It erupted 3000-4000 years ago.
