About
Medieval Kriebstein Castle is situated in Middle Saxony, right at the centre of the triangle between the cities of Dresden, Chemnitz and Leipzig. Saxony’s most beautiful knight’s castle, a closed, fully preserved and completely reconstructed building complex from Late Gothic times, rises on a steep rock towering over the Zschopau River. Discover its 600 years of history when visiting it and feel as if you were back in the Middle Ages. Apart from its castle museum, Kriebstein has numerous events, guided tours as well as its castle inn »Zum Hungerturm« to offer. Today’s highlights to the visitor include a tour of the monumental residential tower, from its lowest cellar up to the medieval and historically preserved floors under the roof, of the castle chapel with precious murals from around 1410, of the Kriebstein Room, of the furnished interior used by the Arnim family and also of the castle well. Various banquet halls are available for weddings, family parties and business functions as well as for events of any kind.

A well-preserved medieval castle about 20 kms northeast from Chemnitz (also quite close to Dresden / Leipzig), Burg Kriebstein is a place worth to visit. Can be reached easily by car; many parking spots right next to the attraction. The castle and its surroundings offer breathtaking views; take a walk and check out the waterfall! Small restaurant and castle museum located in the courtyard (the museum requires a ticket to be purchased).

Beautiful old castle direct on the river Zschopau
Oct 2017 • Family
We visited this old saxonian castel in autumn with fantastic sunshine and warm temperature. We had a short walkaround in the castle and had a lunch in the restaurant. The costs for both are expensive, but it is accaptable for the quality. We enjoyed the walk on the river much more because of the coloured leaves of the trees and the silence on the river.

Amazing spontaneous Sunday in Kriebstein from Dresden!
Nov 2016 • Family
We decided spontaneously to visit Burg Kriebstein from Dresden on a Sunday morning -- it was amazing!! We have two kids and a labrador, called ahead to get permission to bring our mild-mannered therapy dog Luna into the castle (might have been because the crowds are thinner in November!), and had a blast exploring the castle and the grounds. Easy to find, easy parking, beautiful drive. The castle has been restored and preserved beautifully. It's authentic, and medieval in all the right ways. The history video is offered in english and german and is very interesting! The management were extremely friendly -- felt like a family-run business! We love visiting castles here in Germany, and this one is at or near the top of our "most loved" list!

Quiet castle; worth a quick stop
Oct 2016 • Family
This was the first castle tour we took on a series of castles across the country. It is impressive to drive up to, catching quite a few good views before arriving. There is a small parking area right by the main entrance and some smaller parking areas above and below the castle. We paid for the family entrance and guided ourselves around the castle. We would have liked to have seen more but the areas that are accessible have lots of artifacts. All the signage is in German but you can read the dates and get a general feel for the content. Some beautiful views from the grounds. Also some gorgeous painted ceilings and a preserved chapel.
Total time spent was less than an hour.

Grandiose
Oct 2016 • Family
Wonderfully located castle- absolutely worth seeing! You can even ask for a guided tour and if the staff have time, you can get a super class private tour guide. You have to try it and you'll find out things you would not know otherwise. We were absolutely thrilled. It is a popular spot for locals to do wedding fotos, and we witnessed a beautiful scenery that was set for a married couple. Gorgeous surroundings and a grandiose castle!

Wonderful site - it is closed during winter
Dec 2015 • Couples
Despite being closed over winter months we walked around the castle area and it was great. There is an especially nice walk around the river which takes you to a dam. Lovely walk with great photo opportunities...

Need to do the tour !
Mar 2015 • Couples
We were returning from visiting Colditz and Liepzig, so unfortunately did not have time to wait and go on the tour, but the Burg looks amazing from the outside, and living in Bavaria, this is one off the most attractive Burgs I have seen.

There seems to be a lot of trails around the Burg to follow, and we managed to walk along the river a short way to photograph the Burg, the best we could - the day had rain/snow/hail and very windy!

Simply beautiful!

Nice little but beautiful castle at the banks of the Zschopau river. It is rightfully called the most beautiful Knights' Castle in Saxony with breathtaking interior and moving history. Aske for an extensive tour and you'll see many hidden treasures.

Ok for a 6E ticket
Sep 2014 • Solo
I was excited when walking up from the outside - it’s quite photogenic on the exterior. Inside, the ticket lady’s English wasn’t great but she tried. And when I didn’t see any pamphlet in English, and I asked about written narrative inside in English, she went into her files and brought out a 2-sided paper with narrative in English for each room. Tours are only done for pre-arranged groups (at an extra fee). It’s only a small portion of the castle that is accessible – maybe 6 or 7 rooms. But I enjoyed seeing what was there, even if 6E seems a bit pricey – at least they’re trying to maintain it. They have a treasure room of goodies not just from here, but from other nearby Schlosses, as well as some altars and religious pieces from here and elsewhere. Some of the rooms are set up as prior occupants might have used. It was family owned until 1945 when it became the State’s. They have an original “toilet” that was a hole in the stone to the grassy area below. A lovely one room chapel with original murals. The painted wood ceilings are beautiful. You have to wander around a bit to find some of the other interesting locations – they weren’t mentioned on the paper: wine cellar, deep keep, meeting hall, old well. There is quite a large portion that is not open for viewing, so while it looks large on the outside, you don't see all of that; for sure one area that is open only to groups.

There were a number of parking spaces directly adjacent, but you still have to walk up stairs to get to the entrance, and there are some stairs inside. There were restrooms available, a restaurant that was closed during the lunch frame on a Tuesday.

Thanks a lot for your comment. Nice, that you have enjoyed your tour around the castle. Our museum shows about 40 rooms, not only 7. You can look around on your own and take the time you need for visiting, also to explore some hidden und on the secound look interesting pieces and areas. We look forward to welcome you again one time. All the best or you and warm greetings from Kriebstein castle.
