The history of this dam and the "bouncing bombs" used to destroy it during WWII is really interesting - we had seen a show on this a few years ago and didn't realize it was here. It is worth a trip to see it.

Everything I expected

Having been to the Dambusters museum at Edertal this trip was an absolute must. Once again it brings home the courage of all involved on both sides as well as the tragic loss of civilian life.

Not only that though it is now a place of great beauty with lots of leisure activities available in beautiful surroundings.
Long may it stay that way.

Mohnesee Dam
Apr 2019 • Couples
We visited the Dam on a beautiful sunny day. As we were staying fairly near it was a must see, remembering the film The Dam busters. It was a very emotional experience for some visitors remembering those who lost their lives at that time.

A place of historic significance.

As a young boy I remember watching the dam-busters film in awe. To visit the site of this wartime event is something anyone who say the film or is interested in WW2 history should visit. A memorial next to the dam wall explains the tragic loss of lives including so many civilian ones. Thought provoking, sad but worthwhile.

A sombre history
Apr 2018 • Couples
The bombing of this dam caused 1,600 civilian deaths and the destruction of whole villages. Visit the memorial at its base. The surrounding area is beautiful for walking or biking.

We had a lovely day exploring this area. They have several; good spots to eat while overlooking the dam and lake. Great photo opportunities abound!

History....Dambusters!!
Jun 2018 • Couples
We visited as part of a coach tour doing a Dambusters Tour.
This place was packed with tourists and locals alike just walking and reminiscing the dams history.

Wonderful to see

If you have not been before then the Dam is worth a visit. The weather was beautiful for us which made a difference. The bouncing bomb was a genius invention and 617 squadron (The Dambusters) were incredibly to actually bomb this dam during WW2.

"Dambuster" dam. And a very nice place as well

One of the dams from the "Dambuster" raid in may 1943. The place is stunning, and there was a lot of tourist when we were there, but it dídn´t matter, because there is lots of room.

A Dam no longer busted
Jun 2017 • Couples
One of the dams breached by the allies during the war and the main one featured in the Dambusters Film. You can park and walk over the dam and enjoy lovely views of the lake and river, although the hundreds of lovers padlocks attached to the wire trellises are an eyesore. There is a memorial to the people who lost their lives as a result of the breaching of the dam as well as a small kiosk selling souvenirs. Toilets are available also.
