About
Skelligs Chocolate is a family run business overlooking the magnificent Skelligs Rocks, on the south west coast of Ireland. Our factory opened its doors in 1996, consisting of two little production rooms; one for making chocolate and the other for packaging. The factory has since expanded to a state of the art production facility with adjoining seasonal cafe which serves delicious hot chocolate, tea, coffee and homemade treats. With the only open plan chocolate production facility in Ireland, we encourage you to call in to see our chocolate being made, taste the delicious treats and ask the friendly staff all about where chocolate comes from and how it is made. If you are travelling the Wild Atlantic Way in Kerry make sure to pop in.

A Humble Chocolate Gem on the Ring of Kerry
Chocolate lover or not, this place is worth a stop since it's on the Ring of Kerry drive. The opened at 10:00am and the factory team was already busy making their delicacies. Cathal shared his knowledge of the various products they produce as well as allowed us a tasting of their mouth-watering samples! Before we said goodbye, we purchased a bag of chocolate shards and a box of milk chocolate orange brandy truffles as our Ring of Kerry souvenirs!

    No more buttons??
We have been very loyal customers to this establishment for over two decades we were shocked this year to find they are no longer doing the strawberry, caramel or white chocolate buttons! They were a big favourite. Hope this will be rectified by the next time we visit as it was very disappointing for the children. The staff as always were lovely and very helpful and the location is absolutely beautiful.

Great Place for a Sweet Treat!
This was our second visit to the chocolate factory and it's just as great as the first time. You get to sample all of their freshly made chocolates with explanations of each by the talented staff. Nice little stop for a sweet treat and presents to bring home with you on the beautiful Skellig Ring.

Though in the middle of nowhere, I highly recommend making a stop at this factory and tasting room.
Since it's popular, we waited for about 20 minutes to enter, but it was worth it (and free). You walk briefly through a viewing window to see the chocolate making in action, and then a worker starts a tasting. You get to try about 3-4 pieces of their chocolate while you discuss about the process, the flavor, where they get it from, and all the rest. Afterwards, you can purchase chocolate or pastries at their café.
I recommend the whiskey chocolates, paired with their spicy hot chocolate - it was actually spicy, no kidding but delicious.
Overall, great experience and staff.

Hi polomartin8519, thank you for your visit and review. Yes, we are in a beautifully remote location, and thankfully worth the trip, we hope. Unfortunately with the current Covid restrictions (August 2021) still in force it has really slowed down our ability to allow visitors in, we do hope that 2022 will be back to normal . I am delighted to hear that you enjoyed yourself and that you found some favourites too. We look forward to welcoming you back soon, Colm Healy Skelligs Chocolate

I'm going to be honest here, we didn't know we were stopping off at a chocolate factory. We were in desperate need of a toilet and were relieved when we saw the word Cafe on a sign! What a stroke of luck that call of nature turned out to be! After using the impeccably clean toilets we said we'd have a look at the chocolate, and we made a couple of purchases. Afterwards we noticed the tasting area, and who turns down free samples of chocolate?! We were really impressed with the knowledge of the lady giving out the samples, and equally impressed by the sheer quantity of chocolate she was giving us. We definitely had 9 or 10 different ones to try. Discovered then how fantastic the chocolate actually is. Often times the more expensive chocolates can be a little disappointing. Not so here. You can taste the quality of the ingredients that they are using, and I have to say that the price point for the quality you are getting is very good. We ended up going back and buying more chocolate after the tasting. The lady very kindly suggested the best value for money options for the particular flavors we were interested in. No hard sell. No up selling. The Cafe looked lovely, but we were doing both the Ring of Kerry and the Skellig Ring in the one day and couldn't really stay any longer. We will be sure to make time for it in our itinerary on our next trip to the area though. We will also be placing orders online when we get through our current stash of chocolate. What a fantastic accidental find. Well worth stopping by.

We called into the Skellig Chocolate Factory as it was my Son's Birthday and what better place to get chocolate. There was a small queue when we arrived about 20 people but unfortunately this wasn't manned for Social Distancing, which in this climate is very poor. There was a girl giving out chocolate treats which the kids loved.
Inside you couldn't really see much in regards to making the chocolate which was disappointing but again the sampling of the chocolate was nice. The shop it quite small and again no social distancing guidelines at all inside which really surprised me.

Hi doloreso605, thank you for taking the time to come and visit us and while I'm glad you enjoyed the chocolate; I'm saddened there was an issue with social distancing. I completely accept that this is your experience but I do feel that you could have discussed this directly with us at the time as I have a sign at the till letting everyone know that I am more than happy to discuss any matter (good or bad, or even just a difference of opinion) and this has my personal email and my mobile number, also all staff are empowered to deal with any visitor concerns and not just in relation to Covid. Can you tell me what happened when you brought this to the attention of a member of my staff? Going directly to Tripadvisor gives the impression we have not made any efforts. You have omitted to mention that everyone who enters has their temperature taken by a contactless thermometer and that all entering must use our handsfree sanitiser. We also have a tv screen on loop detailing our Covid 19 policies. If anyone has a temperature or exhibits symptoms of Covid we do not allow them to enter. Inside we have several signs indicating the need for social distancing both on the walls and on the floor (I have just uploaded a sample of images to the ‘Skelligs Chocolate Photo Gallery’ just now to show that they are there). After 16 months of Covid we do feel that everyone must take an amount of personal responsibility for social distancing. I am not aware of anywhere making the efforts we are in trying to stay safe. In relation to 'which in this climate is very poor'? Can you give me examples of companies doing this well, so we can improve, please. With regard to the issue you couldn’t see much I am not sure when you came or what day of the week but as a proper functioning chocolate factory we only produce Monday through Friday (Due to the constraints of Covid we cannot get enough staff to work 7 days a week). We have also (once again due to Covid restrictions for Health & Safety) had to reduce the amount of viewing platforms available. Sorry to seem picky but relative to what is ‘The shop is quite small' - we have approx 140sqm( 1,500sq ft) of open space with no more than 4 to 5 groups in it at any one time. I am not sure what size of shop you were expecting? Can you contact me directly on colmjhealy@yahoo.com to discuss this further that I may put your mind at ease. And please do not mis-understand me, we do make mistakes and are more than happy to put our hands up when we do but it is unfair on us when only one side/ aspect of a situation is highlighted. yours sincerely Colm Healy Owner, Skelligs Chocolate.

We stopped here while doing the ring of Kerry . It’s a slight bit out of the way but we really enjoyed it . It was very COVID aware and temperature was checked on the way in . Staff are so friendly . You can see them making the chocolate through the glass window . You get to sample a few different ones also . Of course we bought some boxes after this too . The only thing is that its a pity the girl at the entrance didn’t tell us about getting 10% off our purchases if she took out email . I asked if there were any offers on the chocolates while trying them and was told that if we signed up we would get 10% off . But we would have to go back out to the girl at the entrance to do this . We didn’t bother as there were queues waiting to get in . Overall great place to go.

Hi mccranners, many thanks for your visit and comprehensive review (and 5 stars of course). Yes at the moment we are checking temperatures, ensuring nobody has been outside the country in the last 14 days and all have to use our hand sanitisers to do our bit to help. I'm sorry you were not offered the 10% off, the young lady who was on the door was only covering a break and was not aware of that offer, but if you contact me directly on colm@skelligschocolate.com I will rectify that. Many thanks, Colm Healy Skelligs Chocolate

Called in on a Monday and was promptly met by one of the lovely ladies who took our temperature and casually explained the process to us prior to escorting us to one of the tasting stations where we were met by yet another lovely lady who described the chocolates and offered substantial samples for tasting.
The chocolates are all on display around the spotlessly clean public area but there is no hard sell going on here, the option to buy or not is totally yours.
Please note that the factory is not open on Sundays (a mistake we made) and that the onsite cafe is now closed, so you can only fill up on the beautiful aroma from the production of chocolates together of course with the samples on offer.
The people employed here are extremely pleasant and the drive to get to the factory is an added bonus as the surrounding scenery is spectacular.
Good for all ages.

I visited the Chocolate factory in mid September '20 for the first time and although the mask wearing etc. takes away from the overall experience , needs must.
The covid protocol was excellent and gave a secure feeling when shopping.
The staff were very helpful and the product excellent. The smell of the chocolate was intoxicatingly addictive , even through the mask, yum!. I bought some Orange & Mint flavoured shards and am salivating writing this review thinking of them.
The dark chocolate is also excellent. I'm afraid we over indulged in our purchase and had to return a couple of days later to replenish stocks for the grandkids.
Ha!

Overall we enjoyed our trip to the Skellings chocolate factory and would recommend a visit. The staff were friendly and the sampling a nice experience. We felt social distancing inside was good as they only allow small groups in at a time and we enjoyed our hot chocolates outside on the picnic benches provided. Sanitisation, masks and temp checking are good covid control measures.
However, I did note a previous review regarding social distancing or lack thereof in the queue to get in and given the owners response to this I was disappointed to see that no control measures had been put in place to ameliorate this issue. Simple line markings on the ground to denote the required spacing might help and maybe the girl managing the queue could remind people to distance and wear their masks if possible.
It may also be advisable to have a server wipe down tables in between guests as we didn't witness this to be the case.
In addition I feel the need to note that some people don't feel comfortable raising these issues in person as this requires prolonging the stay so forum's like this can be helpful for making recommendations for change which should be accepted graciously as the recommendations that they are and not an attack on the premises.
We will enjoy our chocolate purchases and wish your business all the best

Hi MrsPrincess1987, thank you for taking the time to visit us and for your review. It is great to hear that overall you enjoyed your visit and that while inside was good its regrettable you were disappointed with the way we managed it outside. I thank you for your observations and I appreciate your input. I completely agree that some people don't want to make their comments there and then but we are more than happy to oblige when they do. But I would also comment that I'm not sure going straight to public forums is the answer either. I completely accept that all your feedback is for our betterment and it is taken this way but it is not practical to go into every aspect of a review (as you mentioned the previous one a few down). Everything you have said could have been emailed directly to us? and if we had your phone number I would happily explain why we do what we do. As the owner I take responsibility for all the actions here and would be more than happy to discus this more. All businesses need robust feedback like yours to improve and it makes inhouse training much easier when we can show where something we have not done right impacts on our visitors. Thank you for your closing kind words and I hope you enjoyed the rest of your time in Kerry. Colm Healy Skelligs Chocolate

We visited on the reccommendation of a local resturant and we were blown away! The drive here is unbelieveable, and this place is nestled in a gorgeous valley across from a beach with a view that pictures can not capture. Once inside, the smell is intoxicating and you can watch masterfully crafted chocolate being made right before your eyes! Samples are abundant, there is a wide variety of flavors and styles with complimentary coffee to wash it all down. We felt like kids in here, and we bought plenty to take along with us. This is an absolute MUST SEE, really an incredible place!

Hi Kyle S, you have hit all the high points there, a commendation, a great drive to get to us with wonderful views of Skellig Michael. Then thanks for the kind words about the factory itself and its great to hear the 'kid' inside got to come out for a while. Until next time, slán, Colm Healy Skelligs Chocolate

I stopped by for a visit with my Mum who had just turned 86 and from the moment we arrived, we were greeted and welcomed and so well looked after. In many ways I was like a child again thinking I was in the Wonka Factory and I was singing Umpa Lumpa to the smiles of everyone.
The chocolate tasting was just sublime, I had to be dragged away from the counter and the coffee shop was simply stunning, especially the homemade Banoffi Pie.
I would highly recommend a visit here and don't be in a rush as you won't want to leave.

We visit here a couple of times a year on our holidays in Ballinskelligs. We wondered how they were going to handle things because the place is normally a hive of activity. But I have to say I was super impressed by the system and I felt that it took very little away from a really enjoyable visit. Customer care was at the forefront from queuing outside (marquee and umbrellas for a rainy day) to temp checks and sanitising stations before entry. Keep up the good work guys and hope to see you all again in 2021.
