There are more than 350 ancient monuments within a six-mile radius of the village of Kilmartin, Argyll: 150 of them are prehistoric. This extraordinary concentration and diversity of monuments distinguishes the Kilmartin Glen as an area of outstanding archaeological importance. It is one of Scotland’s richest prehistoric landscapes. Kilmartin House Museum is an award winning world-class centre for archaeology and landscape interpretation established to protect, investigage and interpret this internationally important archaeological landscape and the artefacts that have been found here. At this unique and vibrant centre you can also see ‘The Valley of Ghosts’ audio-visual – a time travelling experience with breath taking imagery and haunting music. There is an on site shop and an award winning cafe. To find out more, explore our web site, wander through our interactive map and see what's on our Events Programme.

Visiting the small museum first really helps make sense of so many of the other sights at Kilmartin Glen. I enjoyed this place so much more than Stonehenge - you can get up close to the ruins here.

It was small but adequate. It had some archaeological remains in the museum but the best parts for me were the map and book on the stones that I got in their bookstore. Just make sure to go into the church next door and look at the megalithic art as well as a small stone building next to it which... More

We went to the Museum on out first day in Kilmartin Glen; this turned out to be an excellent plan as we found the coffee shop and loads of useful info. It helped us prioritise which sites we wanted to see, and booked on a walk they they doing a couple of days later (no idea how often they do... More

Great little museum that has big plans for the future. The museum, whilst only small, gave you a really good overview of the history of the area. It's due to close for refurbishment so make sure you check if it's open or not. Take a peek at the quirky taps in the washrooms but don't leave without trying the food... More

We really enjoyed browsing this museum. Artefacts from nearby sites (and from other parts of Scotland) are superbly displayed.

Kilmartin Museum is set in beautiful and peaceful surroundings in Argyll, West Scotland (30 miles south of Oban). The museum is very interesting and informative, which clearly explains life in the area and the ancient sites near the museum. An easy to follow plan of those sites can be picked up from the museum. The adjacent Kilmartin Church and churchyard... More

As other reviewers have said, an excellent place to start an exploration of the area. The museum explains the ancient sites in the area and provides history and background. The museum also has an excellent café. When you’ve finished in the museum you can go through the gate in the wall of the car park into the adjoining church and... More
