There are more than 350 ancient monuments within a six-mile radius of the village of Kilmartin, Argyll: 150 of them are prehistoric. This extraordinary concentration and diversity of monuments distinguishes the Kilmartin Glen as an area of outstanding archaeological importance. It is one of Scotland’s richest prehistoric landscapes. Kilmartin House Museum is an award winning world-class centre for archaeology and landscape interpretation established to protect, investigage and interpret this internationally important archaeological landscape and the artefacts that have been found here. At this unique and vibrant centre you can also see ‘The Valley of Ghosts’ audio-visual – a time travelling experience with breath taking imagery and haunting music. There is an on site shop and an award winning cafe. To find out more, explore our web site, wander through our interactive map and see what's on our Events Programme.

This small museum doesn't have a lot of the interactive bells-and-whistles that major museums do for the younger set, but it was just fine for this baby boomer. They did have a grinding stone and some other items that kids could try their hands at. Fascinating collection of items that have been retrieved from the area's archaeological digs with explanations... More

This is a great example of a local museum at its best. Informative without being didactic and all the better for some of the sites being visible through the windows.

We heading to Kilmartin and the standing stones on the recommendation of our B&B host. The Museum has a fascinating display of stones, tools, and other items and written narratives throughout. The buildings and grounds are gorgeous as well. A nice stop!

Kilmartin is a quaint village in an area surrounded by so many ancient and historic sites that it's of international significance. [According to the museum there are more than 800 prehistoric and historic sites within 10 miles of the village.] Kilmartin museum holds a fascinating collection of items from these nearby sites as well as interactive models and even recordings... I recommend visiting this museum before walking to the standing stones, chambered tombs, and henges in Kilmartin Glen.

The museum is a small but an excellent presentation of the area's history and archaeological finds. We also went on the guided walk, led by enthusiastic volunteers on Wednesday afternoons. Our guides, Michael and Laura, were excellent and led us cheerfully and expertly on a two and a half hour walk to see the cairns of the linear cemetery and... More

Interesting displays and a good place to start if you are planning to visit the cairns and standing stones in the area. The cafe was very good and there was also a gift shop. Staff very pleasant and helpful

Well laid out and clearly labeled displays of an age well gone. Children catered for with interactive activities. The attached cafe is excellent for tea/coffee or light lunch. Directions for walks are available to close by areas of interest. Did not attempt any as it was rather wet and windy at time of visit. Although it was interesting to observe... More
