About
One of the most beautiful churches of Basque Country, situated in the heart of the village. The church holy Martin was built in the XVIIth century under the cure of Axular. Majestic with its tower in five floors, and in its feet the old cemetery. Inside, three floors of galleries in sculptured oak, and their turned wooden balusters. The sundial carries the inscription: Oren guziek dute gizona kolpatzen azkenekoak of the hobirat egortzen (every hour hurts the man, the last one sends him to the grave). In September, 2003, the bell tower burned during a fire, the new bell (the most sculptured in France) was inaugurated in September, 2005. Visit of the bell tower every Monday of the summer in 11:00. Otherwise by appointment.

This is a beautiful church in one of France’s designated beautiful villages. The interior, at least to me, was somewhat novel in that I don’t recall the interior of any other church in France that I have been to quite like the interior of this one. Well worth a visit.

Visited Eglise Saint-Martin de Sare while on a walking holiday and staying in Sare. Such a pretty town and the church is the central point. Well worth going inside. The best church in the Basque region.

Three levels of platforms along the walls, this is one more than usual in Basque country. The tower is massive compared to the rest of the building.
