This sanctuary is very nice, especially in winter, offering a magical atmosphere. There are several mass functions, both in German and Italian. The priest was a fantastic Ugandan speaker, supported by a nice choir of Ugandan singers. Do not miss the ex voto gallery, where faithful people have left drawings and paintings reminding of their misfortunes and the blessed helps they received by God or the Holy Mary.

For people who like to religious trips, is a good choice, the sanctuary is big and beautiful, well kept and maintained, nearby is a style Self service restaurant (we simply had brought food from home and ate outdoors we found a table with benches that there is just meters from the Sanctuary). Next to the parking lot I think there is a kind of library building on the top floor. On the lower floor are the public toilets, the day we visited the site lighting was not good, not all the lightbulbs worked, and the cleanliness of the toilets was not good, there was no toilet paper, this may be due to the number of people visiting the place. There are walking trails in the mountains around, the view is wonderful, there are also hotels.

You can go very close to the Madonna di Petralba Shrine with a car, but the tradition ask for reaching the Sanctuary walking. In the main road connecting the cities of Bolzano and Trento at more or less 30 Km from Bolzano there is the small city ofLaives. From there there is a hiking trail that go up in between pine woods until the Shrine. The town of Laives is at 250 mt over the see level and the Shrine of the Madonna of Pietralba is at 1520 mt of altitude. Is a climb that take several ours mostly in the woods. At the end of the woods there is a big open space were in a prominent site there is this Sanctuary build around the year 1638. Inside the shrine there are several walls full of gift and messages thanking Our Lady of Pietralba for the many miracles received by the people. The landscape surrounding the Sanctuary is beautiful, because from there you can see many of important mountains of the Dolomite that are of an impressive beauty. In the site there is also the small church from, more or less, the year 1553 that was build by request of Our lady to the man that She healed appearing to him. If you want to stay several days in the town of Nova Ponente there several hotels and restaurants, is not to far away from the Shrine and all the area is beatiful. When young I went twice walking from Laives to the Shrine. And at that time I learn that some people were so grateful for the miracles and graces received for Our Lady of Pietralba that did the same hiking trail walking with their knees climbing 1270 mt.! In the area both Italian and German are spoke.
